2012 SBMC CIVIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

At the SBMC meeting on May 23rd, Council President-Designate Bill Bishop brought us up to speed on the "State of the City" from his perspective. At that same meeting a flyer was passed around where Bill was looking for feedback from SBMC members asking:

  • What can/should the city do to improve the ease of conducting business in Jacksonville?
  • What problems are hindering YOUR ability to do business that can be impacted at the City Council Level?

If you missed that meeting, we encourage you to participate and respond.  Please email us at [email protected] to ensure your voice is heard. We appreciate your participation.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Recently I had the pleasure of taking part in a beautiful wedding ceremony and as the bride and groom lit that special candle with two smaller candles, I was reminded of the saying "A candle loses none of its light by lighting another candle." --  Meaning that we lose nothing by giving to another person, especially the three things we crave most: Freedom, Happiness, and Love.

I missed the SBMC meeting last week because of my eye surgery and my week seemed incomplete...  Every week, I look forward to our meeting Wednesday afternoon. --  I love to feel the positive energy in the room and see our club's growth this year.  It also makes me happy to see the collaboration among our members, the growing support and friendship we offer one another.  I hope many of you share similar feelings about our great organization.

I would like to thank our 1st Vice President Jepp Walter for running the SBMC meeting last Wednesday.  I would also like to express my appreciation to all of you who sent the kind words for a speedy recovery. Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you Wednesday.

Quote of the week: "We make a living by what we get.  We make a life by what we give."  - Winston Churchill

MEMBERSHIP CORNER -- This Summer and SBMC

Summer is usually a slow time for business and business-oriented clubs will typically have less non-social activity as well. As it should be since Summer is a time for extra bonding and relaxation with our families and friends. But as we enjoy our summer activities and vacations, let's keep in mind some of the things we are accomplishing in the SBMC civically and professionally. Let's be on the look-out for other acquaintances that would be a good fit for our club and invite them along to a meeting.

Summer can be a time to recharge our batteries but also to recharge our membership and swell our ranks with competent professionals and business owners that share our love for Jacksonville. This Summer is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow club members a little better. One of the best ways to make new friends has always been to bring along an old friend. Bringing a family member that might have a little more availability during summer is a great idea too.

This Summer, we look forward to meeting your guests!

MEET-A-MEMBER - JUNE 14th

The Freedom Boat Club, Meet-A-Member will be this Thursday, June 14th, at the Julington Creek location; so set the date.  Last year, we had live music, food from Metro Diner, beverages, boat rides (and a chance to win a sunset cruise) as part of the fun.  If you were there, you know how much fun this is; if you haven't been, you don't want to miss it.  Tickets are only $5, and will be on sale this week; see Mary Cox, Sandy Myers, or Lisa Almeida at the Wednesday meeting.

SHARKS SOCIAL - JUNE 16th

Saturday, June 16th, is our annual Shark's Game!  We will be partnered with the Downtown Council of the Chamber of Commerce, and both sides have 40 tickets available. The cost is $30, and includes a very good seat and our own private party patio, with Hamburgers, Hotdogs, side items, soft drinks, water, and 2 beers each! Additionally, we will have our own private cash bar! So, no walking down the hall and waiting in line. Lots of networking opportunities with both organizations partnering on this event, so bring your business cards, and prepare for a VERY good time! Kids are welcome too. The tickets will be available for pickup at our meeting on June 13th. Anyone not able to pick up their ticket then will have to go to the Will Call window at the arena to pick up your tickets. Buy your tickets on line: https://www.southsidebusinessmensclub.com/event-registration.php?events_id=189
