2012 SBMC CIVIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

The Civic Affairs Committee is actively bringing candidates to SBMC so that you can take part and influence this year's elections.  We have a series of upcoming candidate forums including candidates for the School Board on June 13, July 11, and July 25.  Several candidates are running for each of the three open School Board seats and each forum will present all the candidates for one of those three open seats.  While everyone remains focused on the economy and restoring job growth, education remains a critical issue of importance.  As City Council President Designate Bill Bishop explained to us recently, the School Board is independent from City Council.  Therefore, it is critically important that we have the very best leadership on the School Board to ensure a top quality education for our children that prepares them to enter the work force.

Separately, on June 27, 2012, we will host the three candidates for Florida Senate District 4 which encompasses all of Nassau County and most of Duval County with the exception of the urban core.  Representative Mike Weinstein, former representative Aaron Bean and attorney Wyman Duggan have all confirmed their attendance for this event.  We encourage your attendance and participation in each of our candidate forums.  If you have questions for the candidates, please forward those to Civic Affairs Co-Chair Paul M. Renner at [email protected] in advance of the event so that we can incorporate your questions.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

SBMC EXCECUTIVE SECRETARY

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the retirement of our Club Secretary, Bobbye Salisbury.  She is leaving us to fully enjoy retirement which she so richly deserves; in that endeavor we wish her well.  Bobbye has served our Club for 5 years and her hard work is appreciated by all our members.  Fortunately, Bobbye has agreed to remain active in her role until a suitable replacement is found.  We have appointed a "search committee" (Angie Tekin, Jepp Walter and Mark Wilkinson) to identify prospective candidates, so if you have any recommendations or suggestions for this position, please send an email to Angie Tekin at [email protected].

Thank you all and again, we wish Bobbye the best.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

At last Wednesday's meeting we saw a show of hands from members who had either done business with guests of other members or had brought guests that did business with other members and almost everyone raised their hand. The same would have been true about guests participating in volunteer opportunities that benefit the club and all of us. Doing business and volunteering with one another is a beautiful thing but it pales in comparison to the potential of doing business with all the other contacts of all the other members. When you bring a guest, be sure that our members get a chance to meet them. Also, when you see someone else with guests, go out of your way to show them why we are not only the most prestigious civic club in Jacksonville but also the friendliest. I look forward to meeting many of your friends and seeing them sworn in as new members in the coming months.

Scott Schilbrack,

2012 SBMC Membership Chair

MEET-A-MEMBER - JUNE 14th

Back by popular demand: the Freedom Boat Club, Meet-A-Member will be on Thursday, June 14th, at the Julington Creek location; so set the date.  Last year, we had live music, food from Metro Diner, beverages, boat rides (and a chance to win a sunset cruise) as part of the fun.  If you were there, you know how much fun this is; if you haven't been, you don't want to miss it.

As always, tickets are only $5, and will be on sale this week; see Mary Cox, Sandy Myers, or Lisa Almeida at the Wednesday meeting.

SHARKS SOCIAL - JUNE 16th

What's better than watching live football in June?...Watching it live, in an air-conditioned building.  SBMC is joining with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Council to see the current Arena Bowl Champion Jacksonville Sharks Arena Football team play the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, June 16th.  We will be occupying one of the Suites at the Coliseum; cost will be $30 per person, and includes Hamburgers and Hot Dogs, sides and fixin's, and a variety of beverages.

And what's better than watching football, in June, in air-conditioned comfort, in a suite with food and beverages?!...Halloween!  You read it right; it's Halloween-In-June night at the game.  Dress up in your favorite Halloween outfit...you spent a lot of money on it back in October, now you can amortize it over another wearing.  We have a limited number of tickets, so secure your lot with Julie Clements, Michael Gullion, or Angie Tekin, as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

COKE ZERO 400 AT DAYTONA - JULY 7th

Join the SBMC at the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola perched above pit road in the infield. A day in the patios is a truly riveting experience. With a bird's eye view of the exit of pit road, the open-air Pit Road Patios will take your breath away.  Package Includes:

  • Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola Pit Road Patio for July 7th, 2012
  • Food, Unlimited Coke Products, Dasani Water, and Beer
  • Pre-Race Access with Sprint FANZONE pass (Weather and schedule permitting)
  • Largest Fireworks Show in the Southeast after checkered flag
  • $140 Per Person (A SAVINGS OF OVER $200)

Tax Included. No Service Charges. For additional information, please contact Charlie Templeton at 386-681-6819 or email at [email protected].

SERGEANT AT ARMS - PATRICK HEATHERINGTON

In order for us and San Jose Country Club to properly prepare for the SBMC meeting, we ask you to RSVP and let us know if you intend to have lunch.  This will ensure that SJCC has proper seating and enough food for our group.  RSVP to [email protected].

If you feel called to lead our meeting in the Invocation or the Pledge of Allegiance, please email [email protected].
