PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Since this newsletter is being published on Sunday, May 13th, the day of a celebration honoring mothers, I would like to start by saying Happy Mothers' Day to all our Moms.  President Ronald Reagan said, "From our mothers, we first learn about values, caring, and the difference between right and wrong".

My message this week is about giving and receiving.  We had an exciting week volunteering at TPC, working hard, having fun, and raising money for our Club. This Friday, we have another major fund-raising event - the 4th Annual Jax Craft and Import Beer Festival. I would like to thank Mike White with Client Focused Media for giving us the opportunity to participate in the Festival and raise thousands of dollars for the SBMC.  Thank you, Mike and thank you to all of you who will be volunteering at this fun event.  I look forward to seeing you at the Veterans Memorial Arena Friday night.

Some of you might think that we do too much in May - TPC, BeerFest, YAP Charity Golf Classic, and the Jax Jazz Festival.  I tend to agree with you; however, we don't have much control over scheduling of these events.  In addition, all four events are different and each event attracts different club members. The fact that we are one of the largest civic organizations in town with almost 350 members should also help us fulfill our commitments.  All it takes is your willingness to give your time and participate in one of our activities.

There are two types of people - givers and receivers.  It applies to your day-to-day personal life and it also applies to your social life with the SBMC.  I appreciate so many of you for giving your time, talents and financial support to our club. You keep telling me that in return you receive many benefits from the club.  I believe that giving is better than receiving because giving does start the receiving process.

There is only one way to truly receive, to truly enrich yourself and enjoy prosperity and that is to first give.  It is just one of those universal laws, like the law of gravity and there is really no way around it.  If you went to college, you did not first seek proof of a job, but gave your time and money to enrich yourself so that you would be ready when a job came your way.  In the same way, you did not wait to be loved before loving, you gave your love and in return you were loved.  You gave your trust first and in return you were trusted.

Quote of the week: "One of the things I keep learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people." ~ Dick Gregory

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

The SBMC first ever Ladies versus Gentlemen competition is off to a great start.  Both teams, Team Scott (Scott Schilbrack) and Team Julie (Julie Wesling), have already brought several new members in. The team that sponsors the most new members in May and June will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant.  It's not too late to join one of the teams, so let's have some fun and help our club grow.  As a reminder, our New Member Orientation will be on Wednesday, May 16th at 11:30am at San Jose Country Club.

JACKSONVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL - May 25th-May 27th

We have a real treat for our members who are not going out of town Memorial Day. The Jacksonville Jazz Festival will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we have 2 beer/wine tents donated to us.  We need 3 people per tent per shift, so please sign up quickly because space is going fast.  The sign up book will be at the meeting and you can always go online to www.sbmcjax.com and click the volunteer link.  Come have fun, listen to some awesome music and help us finish our fund-raising season strong. http://www.makeascenedowntown.com/

MEET-A-MEMBER - JUNE 14th

Back by popular demand: the Freedom Boat Club, Meet-A-Member will be on Thursday, June 14th, at the Julington Creek location; so set the date.  Last year, we had live music, food from Metro Diner, beverages, boat rides (and a chance to win a sunset cruise) as part of the fun.  If you were there, you know how much fun this is; if you haven't been, you don't want to miss it.

As always, tickets are only $5, and will be on sale soon; see Mary Cox, Sandy Myers, or Lisa Almeida at the Wednesday meetings.

SHARKS SOCIAL - JUNE 16th

What's better than watching live football in June?...Watching it live, in an air-conditioned building.  SBMC is joining with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Council to see the current Arena Bowl Champion Jacksonville Sharks Arena Football team play the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, June 16th.  We will be occupying one of the Suites at the Coliseum; cost will be $30 per person, and includes Hamburgers and Hot Dogs, sides and fixin's, and a variety of beverages.

And what's better than watching football, in June, in air-conditioned comfort, in a suite with food and beverages?!...Halloween!  You read it right; it's Halloween-In-June night at the game.  Dress up in your favorite Halloween outfit...you spent a lot of money on it back in October, now you can amortize it over another wearing.  We have a limited number of tickets, so secure your lot with Julie Clements, Michael Gullion, or Angie Tekin, as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

SBMC GOLF OUTING - JUNE 22nd

Our next golf outing will be June 22nd, at Palencia, in St Johns County.  As this is an exclusive private course, the cost is $50/person which includes range balls; first tee is at 12:30pm.  The golf outings have been consistently selling out this year, so make your reservations with Julie Clements soon-only 5 spots left.  There will be no outing in May due to TPC and the SBMC YAP Golf Classic.

SERGEANT AT ARMS - PATRICK HEATHERINGTON

In order for us and San Jose Country Club to properly prepare for the SBMC meeting, we ask you to RSVP and let us know if you intend to have lunch.  This will ensure that SJCC has proper seating and enough food for our group.  RSVP to [email protected].

If you feel called to lead our meeting in the Invocation or the Pledge of Allegiance, please email [email protected].
