PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Players Championship is upon us and we opened our fund-raising season with a great party at Julie's house on Cinco de Mayo. Our big thanks to Julie and Dan Clements for opening their home to us again for our annual kick-off party.  As always, we enjoyed delicious food, drinks, music, and a fellowship. Everyone who attended the party had a wonderful time.

I'm excited to be volunteering, along with many of you, at TPC this week. Somebody told me a while ago that volunteers are paid in six figures... S-M-I-L-E-S...  So, I'm sending my big smiles and gratitude to all of you, the SBMC volunteers, who make our organization one of the greatest in Jacksonville.

Quote of the week: "Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another."  ~Erma Brombeck

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

2012 LEADERSHIP TEAM

PATRICK HEATHERINGTON

Some things you may not know about our Sergeant at Arms:

  • Born in Roanoke, VA (Barely a southerner....he sounds like a Yankee)
  • Moved around every year as a child and got used to making new friends (this has served him well as he needs new friends often to replace those he's offended)
  • Grew up Irish Catholic....reason number 3 why he's always apologizing to people
  • Avid horseback rider all through Middle and High School (owned the tallest horse in the barn, an early indicator of his ego)
  • Built the motor to his first car in shop class a 1984 Mustang Convertible...it ran eventually
  • Worked at various Jiffy Lube and Express Lube Stores from age 16-19, at first working in the pit was fun but then they discovered he could sell and made him the annoying guy who came in and tried to sell you things you didn't need like wiper blades for $40/pair
  • Went off to Nashville Auto Diesel College after high school....that lasted 2 mos.
  • Graduated UNF in year (Lucky#) 7 with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science
  • Started in banking 11 years ago in a grocery store bank (Confused about the timeline yet?)
  • Worked in Securities for a while and acquired Series 7 and 63 Investments licenses
  • Currently works as a Business Banker/lackey for Synovus Bank
  • Has no chance at ever beating Mike White in Racquetball but still goes back for punishment
  • Loves to Golf....though Golf doesn't love him
  • Hasn't found a woman who can stand him longer than 3 months (a month ago it was 2 mos) in the last 10 years....not surprising
  • Aspires to run a Fortune 500 company, or be President of the United States....well, the ego is there and the bar isn't set very high
MEMBERSHIP CORNER

Have you heard about our latest Membership contest?  It is our first ever Ladies versus Gentlemen competition.  Two teams, Team Scott (Scott Shilbrack) and Team Julie (Julie Wesling), started a friendly competition last week. The team that brings in the most new members during the months of May and June will be rewarded with a $250 happy hour at a local restaurant.

Team captains, Scott and Julie, invite every member of the SBMC to join one of their teams.  Based on the number of applications received last week, each team recruited the following team members:

Team Scott: Hank Duckworth, Jepp Walter, Mike Aselton

Team Julie: Julie Clements

Yes, we received six new applications last week.  We are off to a great start, so let's have some fun and help our club grow!

Scott Schilbrack, 2012 Membership Chair

Julie Wesling, 2012 Membership Co-Chair

JACKSONVILLE BEERFEST - MAY 18th 6pm-10pm

Beer Festival is a civic event created for the benefit of Southside Business Men's Club and recently added the Chamber of Commerce. The founder of this event is our SBMC member Mike White, the President of Client Focused Media.  This is a huge logistical accomplishment which heavily relies upon our SBMC labor volunteers to fulfill the needs to serve the 4500 to 5000 guest attendees. The labor assignments are divided into these following work groups which consists of 50 volunteers:

  1. Pre-party Setup crew (assist Vendors' display set ups and supplies).
  2. Security check in Crew (I.D. Verification)
  3. Glassware setup and hand-out Crew (4500 5oz glasses)
  4. Silent auction table attendants Crew (also solicit for table gift donations)
  5. Random floor assignment Crew (assisting vendors various tasks)
  6. Signup sheets for each of the crews will be available at the meetings.  Please contact AJ Richwine alias (AJ PoorBeer) at 904-610-5599. http://www.beerfestjax.com

MEET-A-MEMBER - JUNE 14th

Back by popular demand: the Freedom Boat Club, Meet-A-Member will be on Thursday, June 14th, at the Julington Creek location; so set the date.  Last year, we had live music, food from Metro Diner, beverages, boat rides (and a chance to win a sunset cruise) as part of the fun.  If you were there, you know how much fun this is; if you haven't been, you don't want to miss it.

As always, tickets are only $5, and will be on sale soon; see Mary Cox, Sandy Myers, or Lisa Almeida at the Wednesday meetings.

SHARKS SOCIAL - JUNE 16th

What's better than watching live football in June?...Watching it live, in an air-conditioned building.  SBMC is joining with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Council to see the current Arena Bowl Champion Jacksonville Sharks Arena Football team play the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, June 16th.  We will be occupying one of the Suites at the Coliseum; cost will be $30 per person, and includes Hamburgers and Hot Dogs, sides and fixin's, and a variety of beverages.

And what's better than watching football, in June, in air-conditioned comfort, in a suite with food and beverages?!...Halloween!  You read it right; it's Halloween-In-June night at the game.  Dress up in your favorite Halloween outfit...you spent a lot of money on it back in October, now you can amortize it over another wearing.  We have a limited number of tickets, so secure your lot with Julie Clements, Michael Gullion, or Angie Tekin, as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

SBMC GOLF OUTING - JUNE 22nd

Our next golf outing will be June 22nd, at Palencia, in St Johns County.  As this is an exclusive private course, the cost is $50/person which includes range balls; first tee is at 12:30pm.  The golf outings have been consistently selling out this year, so make your reservations with Julie Clements soon.  There will be no outing in May due to TPC and the SBMC YAP Golf Classic.

SERGEANT AT ARMS - PATRICK HEATHERINGTON

In order for us and San Jose Country Club to properly prepare for the SBMC meeting, we ask you to RSVP and let us know if you intend to have lunch.  This will ensure that SJCC has proper seating and enough food for our group.  RSVP to [email protected].

If you feel called to lead our meeting in the Invocation or the Pledge of Allegiance, please email [email protected].
