2012 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

If you did not attend our meeting last week, you missed a heartfelt presentation by our guest speaker Navy Reserve Chaplain Ron Camarda. Father Ron, a Roman Catholic priest, was the active duty Navy Chaplain at the Marine Surgical Hospital in Fallujah, Iraq.

He introduced his highly inspirational book "Tear in the Dessert" and shared with us some of his experiences and the fears that he encountered while being in Iraq. His book is about people whose lives were changed forever, including his... I found him extremely caring, outgoing, and full of life.

During his presentation, I had a feeling that his book is not about the Iraq war, it is about what it means to be human and how deeply we are all affected by what happens around us. I was inspired by his presentation and felt, like many proud Americans, grateful to our service men and women who serve our great country and keep us safe.

I often reflect on my past, including special events and holidays. Many of you probably don't know that March 8th is the International Women's Day. This is a holiday that I, as a young woman growing up in Eastern Europe, celebrated every year.

This special day has been observed since the early 1900's. March 8th is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. In different regions the focus of the celebration ranges from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love toward women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

I would like to wish all the SBMC Ladies a Happy International Women's Day. To all the men in the Club, I suggest doing something special for your Ladies on March 8th. They might be surprised, but I assure you that whatever you decide to do will make them very happy. Have a great week and I will see you on Wednesday.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

2012 LEADERSHIP TEAM - NANCY BENNETT

Some things you may not have known about our 2nd Vice President, Nancy Bennett:

  • I grew up in New Bedford Massachusetts, famous for whaling, Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Roberts Rules of Order and ME!

  • I played baritone horn in marching band where I earned my letter, I tried out for my  high school football team but I got cut in the final round.  Coach told me it was because  there were no locker facilities for me and that if I had been a boy I'd have been a 1st string wide receiver - that was my sophomore year.
  • Attended a few semesters of collage at what is now called UMass Dartmouth but it was SMU (Southeastern Mass. Univ.) when I attended.
  •  Married my 1st husband and moved to Jacksonville in 1981 and found out none of my credits transferred.
  • I have a Z-card which is a US Merchant Marine document required to work on merchant vessels.  I signed onto an oil tanker and worked as an OS - Ordinary Seaman - for 6 months.
  • In 1994 I married the World's Most Interesting Man - "stay thirsty my friends!" but at the time he was known solely by his pseudonym of Steve Bennett.
  • I have two incredible children who both drive me crazy.  My daughter Victoria, 28 on the  24th of this month and my son Alexander, 16 on the 29th of April.
  • I acted in an episode of "America's Most Wanted" and they caught the murderer within a week of airing the episode.
  • I was lucky enough to meet and become friends with Mickey Mantel before he died.
TALLAHASSEE'S TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

I would like to personally THANK Harry Peltz for organizing a wonderful trip to Tallahassee on February 28th. On this trip, about 20 of the SBMC members had a unique opportunity to tour the Governor's Mansion, the Senate, and the Supreme Court building. We also visited the Capitol and met with the United States House of Representatives and more..

We had many engaging discussions, learned a lot about our state government and, of course, we had fun. Our day was packed with activities and we have a lot to share with our SBMC members. So, please tune in next week for the detailed report from Harry's committee.

Please continue to go out of your way to make guests feel welcome by saying hello and introducing yourself. We will be giving away another $150 to whoever has brought in the most new members for the 1st quarter. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at
