The Axemen is a semi-professional rugby league team based in Jacksonville.  Together with the New Haven Warriors, the Axemen were founded in 2006 as an expansion team of the American National Rugby League (AMNRL).  Since their inception they have become one of the most successful rugby football clubs in the United States both on and off the field.  They advanced to the AMNRL playoffs in 2006, 2008, and 2009, and won the 2010 AMNRL Championship. They currently hold the record for the largest margin of victory (96-8) in the league's history.  In 2011 they became one of seven teams to depart the AMNRL to form the new USARL, which kicked off in June of that year.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The month of January is almost over and I thought that it would be a good idea for me to share my goals and my vision for the Club with all SBMC members.  My message below is for all of you, but especially for members who were unable to attend our 1st meeting in 2012.

It is a great honor and a privilege for me to be your President this year. Thank you for placing your trust and confidence in me to lead our Club in 2012.  For many years, the SBMC has worked hard for the improvement and betterment of Jacksonville.  We are proud of our history and our accomplishments.  This year, we will continue to support projects our Club has sponsored in the past.  We will also keep our core values and traditions close to our hearts.

Today, I feel that there are more areas for which we have prepared ourselves to invest our time, talent, and resources.  One of my objectives for the Club this year is to increase recognition of the SBMC in our community.  As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, I am calling 2012 "A Year to Share", which I believe, as a Club, we already do very well.

As members of the SMBC, we share a common goal to serve the greater Jacksonville area. We share our love for the Club with others by inviting them to join us in making a difference in our community. Membership is the heart of our Club, the source of its life. With strong and committed Membership, we will pursue greater dreams, we'll pursue programs and projects that will address significant concerns of our community.  It is why I am asking you to support our Membership growth through the year.

Since many people in our community have been negatively impacted by the economic downturn, it is my hope that we can share our resources with those less fortunate. I encourage you to find meaning in some of our Club's activities that are close to your heart. Your involvement determines where the Club is today and where it will be in the future.

Our Club starts its 80th year in a strong financial and leadership position. I am fortunate to work with a team of dedicated Officers, Board members, and Committee Chairs and I promise you that we will work very hard to make 2012 one of the most memorable years in the history of the Club. I also promise you that we will have fun creating long-lasting memories. On behalf of our leadership team, I want to thank you for your support, your friendship, and for the opportunity to serve.

In conclusion, I'd like to share with you a quote from Henry Ford, "Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, and working together is success."  Let's make 2012 significant for our Organization!  I am proud to be a leader of such a dedicated group of Men and Women this year and I look forward to sharing a successful year with all of you.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

MEET-A-MEMBER - FEBRUARY 2ND

Our first Meet-A-Member event is scheduled for this Thursday, February 2nd at 5:30 p.m.  Carter Funk of Deluxe Cleaners is sponsoring this event at his main facility at 6005 Powers Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32217.  Please see Sandy Myers, Mary Cox, or Amy Varela to purchase your $5 ticket. This is a great opportunity to see how the entire laundering/dry-cleaning operation is done and meet your SBMC members.

TALLAHASSEE TRIP - FEBRUARY 28TH

February 28 is the date of our annual Tallahassee Trip. As with everything we do in the Club, this will be a very exciting and fun day.  You will have the opportunity to meet your legislators and get a behind-the-scenes view of our State Capital and other buildings and offices.

We have chartered a very comfortable motor coach for the trip (with a bathroom).  The price of this great trip is only $75 - which includes transportation, snacks and refreshments during the trip and lunch.

Bus seats are LIMITED, so don't miss out on this unique opportunity to visit the State Capital with your fellow SBMC members.  For details and to make your reservations, please contact Harry Peltz at 742-6644 or e-mail at [email protected].
