It's Electric!

Greetings!

They say that April showers bring May flowers. Luckily, that was not the case this past weekend while Mid-Southerners were out celebrating Earth Day. How did you celebrate on this beautiful weekend? There are many ways to continue the celebration to be green and help protect and preserve our earth.

In this newsletter, we will mention what efforts are going around the Mid-South and how you can do your part for our earth and our community as well as give you an update on what's going on at Summerall Electric and AC Electric during this Green month.

EARTH DAY: ACROSS MIDSOUTH, GREEN MINDSET TAKES ROOT

Residents act with growing resolve to live in ways that nurture a healthy environment for all

Greater Memphis is going green. And it's more than spring weather.

In homes, businesses and public venues large and small the evidence is all around us. No longer is the green movement a fringe idea for flower children. From FedEx to City Hall, Collierville to Midtown, going green is thriving across the Mid-South.

Some still are trying to politicize the movement. And, some projects aren't yet financially viable or broadly applicable. But the signs are unmistakable. Memphis is greener every day in hundreds of different ways.

EARTH DAY EVERY DAY IN APRIL

For mayors A C Wharton and Mark Luttrell, one day to celebrate the accomplishments toward sustainable living in Memphis and Shelby County just wasn't enough, so in March they formally dedicated the month of April as Earth Month -- lending their support to events like Shelby Farms' Down to Earth Festival that help foster and protect our community's natural resources.

GOING TO MARKET

Farmers markets have blossomed over the past few years from only a handful to more than 14 markets -- offering more places and days to shop than ever before. Shopping for fresh produce and local products face-to-face with the grower or producer is now possible seven days a week in response to growth in both consumer demand and the number of growers and producers.

STICK A "GREEN FORK" IN IT

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SOLAR ENERGY IN MEMPHIS?

The sun shone brightly at the dedication of the new solar array at the Agricenter that promises to generate 1 megawatt of energy over the course of a year, enough to power 107 homes for a year. About 3,000 solar panels that sit atop the Memphis Bioworks parking garage in the Medical Center will also flow into the electricity supply of Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division.

SUSTAINABILITY DELIVERS FOR FEDEX

FedEx initiatives to conduct its operations in more environmentally sensitive ways have earned the Memphis-based company accolades as a high-profile company that conducts business with sustainability in mind. Some of its green initiatives include LEED certification for FedEx Express World Headquarters and conversion of its airplanes and trucks to greener fleets.

GREENLINE A GAME CHANGER

As cyclists, runners and walkers travel up and down the Shelby Farms Greenline, smiles are exchanged and there is a sense of conviviality. The Greenline is doing exactly what its planners intended. From jump-starting community development to boosting business at nearby restaurants and retail stores, the Greenline has been a boon for Memphis since its opening over a year ago.

PLANNING FOR A T12 FLUORESCENT PHASE-OUT

More than 500 million T12 fluorescent bulbs (called "lamps" in the lighting trade) are still in use in nonresidential applications throughout the U.S., but by July 2012, manufacturers will cease producing most of these products. As with many incandescent lamps, the T12 fluorescents - with a design that hasn't changed significantly since 1938 - do not meet current energy-efficiency standards.

Most magnetic ballasts used to drive T12-based fixtures have been off the market since 2010, so many building owners have begun exploring alternatives already. Several options are available for those just beginning to re-examine their lighting plans.

The first choice is to maintain the shells of existing T12 fixtures, retrofitting them with electronic T8 ballasts and compatible T8 lamps. Simply switching to T8s in this fashion will provide environmental and economic benefits. T8 lamps are manufactured using less mercury than T12s and offer both longer service life and better lumen maintenance - that is, their light output doesn't degrade as much over time - than less-efficient T12s. (Retrofitting for use with T5 lamps is more difficult, because these products are shorter than T12 and T8 lamps.)

On the surface, a one-for-one T8 retrofit may seem the least expensive approach, however new fixtures designed for T8 technology may provide better light quality at a comparable overall cost, especially when energy savings are factored into the equation. This is especially true for owners interested in rethinking their existing lighting plan, in which case new fixtures optimized for either T8s or even more efficient T5s might be in order. Older T12 arrangements often provide more light than a space actually needs, so a new plan designed around today's modern optics using fewer fixtures could provide better illumination using much less electricity. Adding daylight and occupancy sensors could add even more savings.

ANGIE'S LIST TESTIMONIAL: A-C ELECTRIC COMPANY

Description Of Work:

We had several electrical problems with lighting in our home.  There were several lights that had simply stopped working and a dimmer light that didn't work properly.

Member Comments:

We found this company by using Angie's List because we didn't know who to call.  A service person arrived at the appointed time that same day.  We were given an estimate and an explanation of what was going on.  The service person was especially friendly and all problems were fixed.  We had no problems with the service.  We will definitely use this company again.

HOLLI'S CORNER

Holli just returned from a visit to New Orleans, Louisiana, for the 13th Annual WBEC South Expo! There she had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other key WBEs and corporate entities. She learned more about how energy efficiency is spreading across the region and identified opportunities for Summerall Electric to provide solutions to Mid-South business owners.
