It's Electric!

Greetings!

The days are longer, the temperature is warming up, the leaves are greening and Easter is just around the corner. That can only mean one thing...spring is here! We welcome this first day Spring today. So, get out of the house! There are so many fun things to do in Memphis, and we would like to give you a few of our favorites.

In this newsletter, we will honor Women's History Month and give you some great local activities, as well as the news and happenings coming out of Summerall Electric Company and A-C Electric. Enjoy!

Congratulations to Holli Weatherington, who
has made the Memphis Business Quarterly's March/April list of Power Players in Contractors. To view the full article, click here

Summerall Electric Company, Inc. and Holli Weatherington are proud to announce that we are officially certified as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE) by the Women's Business Enterprise Council-South (WBEC South).

WBEC

What exactly does it mean to be "certified as a WBE"?

Being certified as a WBE means that a business concern has gone through a rigorous and stringent certification process that confirms the business is owned, managed, and controlled by a woman or women.

GREAT WOMEN IN HISTORY

March harkens the beginning of Spring, and it is National Women's History Month.  Highlighted below is the significance of the movement, shared with us from NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners). Holli, with Summerall Electric is a local NAWBO member.

NAWBOŽ Makes Women's History

March is National Women's History Month-as designated by Joint Resolutions of the House and Senate and Proclamations by six U.S. Presidents-and NAWBOŽ celebrates the amazing achievements of women over the years, including those of our organization. NAWBOŽ has been an integral part of women's history for more than 36 years now, from past NAWBOŽ National presidents who have been inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame for their efforts to the key role our organization played in the passage of H.R. 5050 legislation that had an enormous positive effect on women's entrepreneurship in the United States. Discover these achievements and many more on NAWBOŽ's historical timeline.

Meanwhile, Women's Education-Women's Empowerment is the theme for National Women's History Month 2012.

According to the National Women's History Project-which coordinates observances of National Women's History Month throughout the country each year-although women now outnumber men in American colleges nationwide, this reversal of the gender gap is a very recent phenomenon. The fight to learn was a valiant struggle waged by many tenacious women-across years and across cultures.

As such, this National Women's History Month recognizes six outstanding women whose work and lives testify to the theme. They are:

* Emma Hart Willard, Women Higher Education Pioneer

* Charlotte Forten Grimke, Freedman Bureau Educator

* Annie Sullivan, Disability Education Architect

* Gracia Molina Enriquez de Pick, Feminist Educational Reformer

* Okolo Rashid, Community Development Activist and Historical Preservation Advocate

* Brenda Flyswithhawks, American Indian Advocate and Educator

HOLLI'S CORNER

Now that Spring is here officially (even thought it has felt like it since late January), I make it a point to visit all the local Farmer's Markets, including the Memphis Farmer's Market, Cooper Young Community Famer's Market, and AgriCenter Farmer's Markets.

Get out there and support your local farmers and enjoy some fresh, organic produce!

Other local events that we are interested in are listed below:

Spring Events:

3/23 Trolley Tour @ South Main

Easter events include easter egg hunts and photos with the easter bunny all over town. You can find a listing of them all at http://memphis.about.com/od/annualevents/qt/easter.htm.

There will also be an Easter Brunch served at restaurants across town. You can find a complete listing at

http://memphis.about.com/od/foodanddining/tp/EasterBrunch.htm.

As you have seen in the past, Holli has been very involved in Commission on Missing And Exploited Children (COMEC). COMEC has its annual Treasure Hunt coming up on June  3rd at the MemphisBotanic Garden.

When you buy a new MemphisBotanic Garden membership by May 15th, write "COMEC" on your MBG application! It doesn't cost extra, but supports a great organization!

Earth Day is coming in April. Shelby Farms is planning a big to-do...We'll plan on seeing you there!

Also, mark your calendar for Project Green Fork's Spring Supper, Family Style - May 6th. More details to come next month.
