Collecting Items for Brazil Mission Trip

Our Brazil mission team is hard at work planning for its upcoming trip to Natal in September. There are simple, practical ways that you can share in our outreach to our partners in Felipe Camarão. We have already heard of the hope to collect costume jewelry to share with the women of this community. And through Sunday School our children are collecting sets of Crayola magic markers for the schoolchildren. They would be thrilled to have your help in amassing enough sets for all their "marker pals."

One more item would be easy to collect and great to share: baseball caps. If you have any unused or slightly worn ball caps to share with our friends in Natal, please bring them by the church office through Sunday, September 9.

Once more, the items we are collecting: ball caps, costume jewelry, and Crayola markers. They need to be in the church office by September 9, so that our team can pack them for the trip to Natal. Thanks for your help!

FPC to Hold Hymnal Event September 8

In anticipation of the 2013 publication of Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal, we will sponsor a hymnal event at the churchthat will be open to all, whether clergy, choir singers, worship committee or Session members, or congregation members. Churches in both Holston Presbytery and Abingdon Presbytery are also being invited. This event will take place on Saturday, September 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will be led by the Reverend Meg Flannagan, joined by the Feys and others. The day will feature worship, workshops, seminars, a light lunch, and lots of singing!

RSVPs are requested. If you missed the September 1 deadline, there is still time to sign up. Just email the Feys (svfey@fpcbristol.org) or call the church office (423-764-7176).

Wednesdays in September

Adults Take a Guided Walking Tour of the Old Testament

Please join us for an incredible journey of faith and learning, as we set off on A Walk Through the Bible. Starting Wednesday, September 5, and continuing through the rest of the month, Dr. Fred Foy Strang will lead us in a highly creative, interactive learning adventure that will be as much fun as it will be effective. Using hand motions, catchphrases, and group reviews, we will experience the Old Testament in new and refreshing ways that will rekindle a desire to read and pray again through the Scriptures. Not only will this series lay a strong foundation for understanding, but it will also provide the resources for experiencing even more deeply God's love for us. Each leg of our journey will begin at 6:15 p.m. Books will be available for $10.

Fellowship Dinner for September 5

Before setting off on a tour to nourish your spirit, be sure to join us for a relaxed meal and fellowship at 5:30. Next Wednesday we will dig into comfort food: meatloaf, mashed potatoes, peas, rolls, and dessert. As always, our dinner is presented by Mary Lee Schiesz. Patti Hagerty will help her in the morning, and two Poteats will serve and clean up in the evening.

Student Ministries Small Groups

Katie Arnold and her team invite all middle school and high school students to take part in a relationship journey by joining a small group on Wednesday evenings at 6:00, immediately after the Fellowship Dinner. The groups are led by adults and made up of students of the same age and gender. For the next five weeks, students will take part in a study called "STARTING To Go Where God Wants You To Be." Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to grow and be challenged while immersed in authentic community!

Wednesday Night Kids

The Wednesday Night Kids are studying "God's Wonderful World," and we began at the beginning with the first day of creation. As we continue week by week, we are building a creation tower to demonstrate God's wondrous works over the days of creation. On September 5 we will learn more about the second day as we add to our Creation Tower and participate in activities related to Sky and Water. If you haven't yet joined us, there is still time to be a part of this study. Classes are available for four-year-olds through first grade and for second through fifth grades.

Student Ministries News

5th Quarter Fun Begins September 7

All high school students are invited to "5th Quarter" after Tennessee High School home football games, September 7 and 14 and October 12 and 26. 5th Quarters will take place at the Carter family's home, 1720 Clifton Road, Bristol. Bring your friends and enjoy fellowship around a bonfire, with s'mores and games.

Parents: Please sign up to help chaperone these events and assist with parking. Drivers: Please be very careful as you come up and down the Carters' narrow driveway!

Student Ministries Fellowship

There will be no Student Ministries Fellowship this Sunday, because of the holiday weekend. Student Ministries Fellowship will resume September 9.

We are looking for families to provide dinner on Sunday nights for Student Ministries Fellowship. If you are interested in preparing a meal or providing a purchased meal, please contact Diedre Pendley at pendleyd@btcs.org. Help feed our hungry teens!

Highlights

  • Pledges: Undesignated pledges are roughly $13,000 below expectations, while designated pledges are under by $2,200.
  • Evangelism & Outreach: Because designated pledge income is behind budget, the corresponding expense commitments are behind. As this income is received, the corresponding E&O benevolences are disbursed.
  • Worship: Because unbudgeted income from weddings & conferences has been received, worship expenses have increased a corresponding amount.
  • Christian Education: Under budget on expenses primarily due to corresponding Income line items being under budget for Youth & Adult CE.
  • Administration: Expenses should begin to approach budget in the latter part of the year, as certain planned expenditures will occur (i.e., new computers).
  • Building & Grounds: Over budget due to the transfer of Capital Contingency funds to cover expenses associated with roof flashing repairs. (Associated income item offsets unbudgeted expenses.)
  • Fellowship: Much of the variance is due to Wednesday night dinner income being over budget and expenses being under.

Respectfully submitted,

Aaron Brooks, Finance Chair

Music Notes

Music participants for September 2: Sanctuary Choir; Bill Criswell, violin.

Moses Hogan

Sunday's music: The African-American Spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" first gained wide exposure through concerts in the late nineteenth century by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Its creation has been credited to Wallace Willis, a freedman living in Oklahoma who had been a slave in the Choctaw Nation. Its reference to Elijah's ascent is appropriate as we conclude our look at the stages of life and consider death and resurrection. The musical setting is by Moses Hogan (1957-2003); his arrangements of spirituals set a new standard in the latter part of the twentieth century. The middle hymn, "Lord of All Hopefulness," written in 1931, has been widely used in hymnals since its creation, almost always set to the tune Slane, which is strongly associated with the text "Be Thou My Vision." For a recently published hymnal, a new tune was written by David Schwoebel, who currently serves a Baptist church in Richmond, Virginia. The text by Jan Struther (1901-1953) reminds us that Christ is with us through each part of our day and each stage of our life; Struther is best known as the author of Mrs. Miniver. The new melody effectively captures the comforting nature of the text.

Program of note: Soprano Rachel Barker, accompanied by Vicki Fey, will present a recital on Saturday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the King College Memorial Chapel. Rachel was a scholarship student in our choir while she was at King College and received her master's degree from Westminster Choir College. It is always a privilege to have Rachel sing with us when she is home. There is no admission for the recital, but donations will be gratefully received to assist Rachel with the upcoming audition season in Europe.
