Adult Sunday Morning Education Opportunities |
Adults at FPC this fall can choose among half a dozen Christian education classes on Sunday mornings. We invite you to visit each that piques your interest and find the class best suited to your needs.
A.C. Adams Class is dedicated to the study of the Bible as the inspired Word of God. Participants search the scriptures, then openly discuss their application to their lives. Led by Nancy Allerton, this class meets in Room 125.
College & Young Adult Class leaders Craig McDonald and Betsy Turnbull invite discussion and reflection upon the Bible with an eye to personal relevancy. This class is open to all young adults, college age and older, and meets in Room 127.
In the Graham Landrum Discussion Class, senior adults use the Present Word Bible Study series as they combine Bible study with discussion of current events. This group meets in the parlor and shares facilitator responsibilities.
HeartsBurn Class(Couples and Others) discusses one New Testament Book every week or two with rotational leadership under the direction of Tom and Leigh King; they are beginning with Ephesians. This class meets in Room 117, across from the Director of Children's Ministries office.
Inductive Bible Study gathers for varying short-term studies that focus on the Bible with personal application. This group typically studies a selected book of the Bible by reading and discussing one chapter per week during class. Led by Dave Welch and several lay leaders, this group meets in Room 123.
New Testament (A Year through the New Testament) & Common Interests uses the weekly New Testament readings as a springboard for learning through engaged conversation and fellowship. Led by Chuck Thompson and Kevin Buck, this class meets in Room 167, across from the Boy Scout Hall next to the Fellowship Hall.
And our Friendship Class is for special people who study God's love for all God's people through Old and New Testament stories. This class meets across from the Boy Scout Hall in room 163. |
Student Groups Now Meet at 6:00
Wednesday Evening Program Update |
We are now securely in our regular Wednesday evening program orbit, making occasional minor adjustments to keep us on track. As always, our Fellowship Dinner begins at 5:30 and is followed at 6:15 by an Adult Learning segment, which is taught concurrently with Wednesday Night Kids. The nursery now opens at 5:15 to care for children three or younger, and older children enjoy a brief play period between dinner and study. Our hourlong Student Ministries small group sessions now begin at 6:00.
Fellowship Dinner for August 29
Be sure to join us for a relaxed meal and fellowship before the evening program. Next Wednesday we will enjoy a taco salad bar and dessert. As always, our dinner is made possible by Mary Lee Schiesz, aided on August 29 by Julie King (in the morning) and by John and Claire Pruner and Lee Galliher, servers and cleanup crew.
Adult Learning
How to follow a two-week study of Søren Kierkegaard? A Bible study led by Dave Welch, of course! Join us August 29 to find out what Dave has in store for us.
Student Ministries Small Groups
After the Fellowship Dinner, the middle school and high school students in our Student Ministries Fellowship divide into small groups for wide-ranging discussions. The new meeting time for these groups is 6:00 to 7:00. They are led by adults and made up of students of the same age and gender. Come join us and vote on a new group name!
Wednesday Night Kids
The Wednesday Night Kids are studying "God's Wonderful World," starting at the beginning with the first day of creation and continuing week by week. This week we began work on a creation tower. Classes came together to discuss how to build a tower that would demonstrate God's wondrous works over the days of creation. On August 29 our lesson will be "Sky and Water," God's creation on the second day. If you haven't yet joined us, there is still time to be a part of this study. Classes are available for four-year-olds through first grade and for second through fifth grades. |
Brazil Mission Team Seeks Our Help |

Our Brazil mission team is hard at work planning for its upcoming trip to Natal in September. A tradition of these trips is the fellowship among the women of our churches. To help celebrate that connection, the mission team asks for donations of costume jewelry that we might give to the women of Felipe Camarão.
We Won't Forget the Kids!
Through Sunday school, First Presbyterian Church children will learn about the schoolchildren of Felipe Camarão and collect sets of Crayola magic markers for their counterparts.
If you would like to support either of these projects, you may drop off donations at the church office. Thank you! |
MEP about Halfway to Matching Grant Threshold |
We have had a very generous response from many in the congregation to our Mortgage Elimination Project (MEP). The committee members and officers of the church extend our appreciation to those who have sent in their pledges and gifts to this effort.
We currently have just over half the commitments we must have to receive the matching gift of $100,000. If you have not sent in your pledge form to let us know what you are willing to do, or if you need additional information, please contact one of the committee members listed below or any officer of the church. Thank you for your generosity in this endeavor.

Food Pantry Always Needs Donations |
Although the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry always needs donations, it has been in particularly straitened circumstances this summer. Demand shot up but supplies dried up. Right now, the Food Pantry urgently needs nonperishable food items of all kinds. You can bring your donated food items to the church and place them In the grocery cart in the Fellowship Hallway, or you can take them directly to the Food Pantry at 21 Washington St., in front of First Baptist Church. The Food Pantry is open Monday through Friday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Financial donations are also welcome. Please make your check payable to Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1471, Bristol, VA 24203. For more information, call Jim White at 423-571-4449. |
Mowing Schedule through September 8 |
The grass grows well in the kind of weather we've been having lately, and our Tiger Cat likes to sink its teeth into it. You'll see the following volunteers feeding the Cat in the coming weeks:
Aug. 29-Sept. 1 Karen White-Smith & Eric Cline
Sept. 5-8 Aaron Brooks & Stuart Parker
If you'd like to take the Cat for a run, contact Randy Cook at npolecook@aol.com or 423-956-1541. |
From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes | |
Music participants for August 26: Sanctuary Choir; Dr. David Runner, organist. We are grateful to Dr. David Runner of Milligan College for assisting Steve this Sunday, while Vicki attends her 40th high school reunion in south Florida.
Sunday's music: Myles Coverdale (1488-1569) produced the first complete translation of the Bible into English; his beautiful translations of the Psalms remain much beloved. The Sanctuary Choir anthem is a setting of his version of Psalm 84:1-4 and Psalm 90:17, followed by the first stanza of Isaac Watts's (1674-1748) adaption of Psalm 90, "Our God, Our Help in Ages Past." Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) has taken these words of comfort, which remind us that "blessed are they that dwell in thy house" and that "my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God," and set them to lyrical music that builds to a statement of great rejoicing and praise.

Mary Louise Bringle

The middle hymn, "When Memory Fades," is a new text (2001) by Mary Louise Bringle (b. 1953). It is appropriate for our continued study of the stages of the Christian life, as it addresses the issues of the frailty of the senior years as viewed through the lens of Christian service and witness. It is sung to the familiar tune Finlandia of Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and is known from its pairing with "Be Still My Soul." Bringle's hymn is gaining wide acceptance; it has appeared in the newest Lutheran and Church of Scotland hymnals and will be included in the new Presbyterian resource.
Hymnal event coming up: We will sponsor a hymn event on Saturday, September 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Churches in both Holston Presbytery and Abingdon Presbytery are being invited to attend, and it is open to all, whether clergy, choir singers, worship committee or Session members, or congregation members. This event anticipates the 2013 publication of Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal and will be led by the Reverend Meg Flannagan, joined by the Feys and others. The day will feature worship, workshops, seminars, a light lunch, and lots of singing! RSVPs are requested; email or phone the Feys at church by September 1.
Rehearsals: Children's and youth rehearsals are off to a great start, but there is still time to join a music ensemble. Children and youth have bell choirs and singing choirs, and it will soon be time to think about the Christmas pageant, at which all children, age 4 through fifth grade, may participate, and youth bells will ring! |
