Saying Farewell and Looking Ahead

We don't want to do it, but we must say goodbye soon to our receptionist/secretary, Jeni Hunt, who is leaving us to devote more time to her family. Her last day in our front office will be May 18.

Now we begin a search for a pleasant, capable person to assume her duties. In addition to answering the phone and greeting and guiding visitors, the receptionist/secretary performs clerical tasks, prepares our weekly list of prayer concerns, and produces our worship bulletins. These duties require a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Beyond word processing and spreadsheet maintenance, some experience working with databases could help the new receptionist/secretary navigate our online membership records.

The hours for this position are 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. We invite anyone interested in applying for the job to send a cover letter and a résumé to the Personnel Committee, First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Ave., Bristol, TN 37620. The application deadline is May 15.

Last Meeting Till Fall

Presbyterian Women Gather Tuesday

Presbyterian Women will meet Tuesday, May 8, at 11:00 for circle, followed by Bible study at 11:30 and lunch afterwards. This will be our last meeting until fall, so we hope everyone can be there. Please call the church office to reserve your seat for lunch.

Invitation to the Hite-McGaha Shower

Teresa Hite and Tammy Harris cordially invite all members of the congregation to a drop-in, general shower for Miles Hite and Morgan McGaha, to be held in the church parlor from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 12.

Claim Your Lost Items by May 14

It is spring cleaning time, and we are clearing out the items that have collected in our Lost & Found Department. If you think something you've lost may be found in our collection, please come by the church office by Monday, May 14, and claim it. Unclaimed items will quietly disappear on May 15.

Russian Vocal Ensemble LYRA Returns

LYRA, the fabulous Russian vocal ensemble, returns to our Arts Series Sunday,

One of LYRA's touring groups

May 20, at 3:00 p.m. Steve and Vicki Fey say that the upcoming performance in our sanctuary is "not to be missed." LYRA's selections for this concert range from Russian sacred music to Russian folk songs. The suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college.

Youth Group News

FPC Youth Raise $700 for World Vision

The youth of our church fasted last weekend to raise money through a World Vision International project known as 30-Hour Famine. The 30 or so young people who undertook this mission raised $700 and gained a taste of what it's like to be truly hungry. The results of their efforts will fund projects in Ethiopia, where FPC has longstanding relationships.

Calling All Grads-to-Be

Every year we look forward to honoring the achievements of the new graduates among us. Please call the church office if you or a member of your family will be graduating from high school, college, or any other educational or training program this spring. We need the following information for our recognition efforts: student name, current (not future) school or program, graduation date, degree earned, and field. Thank you for your help!

Jump In! It's a Summer of Fellowship

Join us this summer for fun and Bible study as we enjoy FISH, "fellowship in someone's home." Middle School FISH will meet on Tuesday nights, and High School FISH will meet on Thursday nights, each from 7:00 to 9:00, beginning Tuesday, May 29.

We are looking for families to host these gatherings throughout the summer. Hosts will provide a place to meet, a snack, and a fun activity, such as swimming, games, or a craft. A youth advisor will lead the Bible study.

If you would like to serve as a host, please contact Linda Welch (latwelch@aol.com) or Dave Welch (dwelch@fpcbristol.org) to reserve your night. - Katie Arnold, Director of Youth Ministries

You, too, can take the Tiger for a run!

It's unseasonably hot out there, but you can still feel the wind in your hair on the Tiger Cat. In the next few weeks, we will see the following intrepid mowers of the church lawn racing to get back to the shade, but neatly, neatly:

May 2-5:    Aaron Brooks & Stuart Parker

May 9-12:    Jon McClain & Matt Richardson

May 16-19:    Joe Hagerty & John Vann

You don't have to earn your place in the sun; just contact Randy Cook at npolecook@aol.com or 423-956-1541.

Music Notes

Music Participants: May 6: Sanctuary Choir, Cherub Choir; May 13: Sanctuary Choir, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, Children's Handbells.

Schedule Change: Parents of children's choir members, please note the schedule change in the letter you received recently. (If you didn't get one, please let me know!) And don't forget to send in your reservations for the annual choir awards dinner, to be held Wednesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday's Music: The text of the Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Ave Verum," is a short, fourteenth-century Latin hymn that is a reflection on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross and the gift of his body as shared in the communion meal. It has been set by a number of notable composers (our choir also sings the version by Elgar). Mozart's brief and lovely setting, used this week, was made in 1791, the last year of his life (1756-1791). It was written for a friend who was the music coordinator of a small parish near Vienna. The choir will be singing it in a common English translation.

The choir's introit, "Glory to God," is a traditional Peruvian song that has gained wide acceptance throughout the church. It has appeared in a number of recent hymnals and has been selected for inclusion in the next Presbyterian collection. The postlude is a setting of the second tune (MCKEE) for the text "In Christ There Is No East or West." The tune is an African-American spiritual, first appearing in the 1884 collection Jubilee Songs, and later adapted by Harry T. Burleigh.

The Voices of the Mountains

Program of Note: The Voices of the Mountains, under the direction of Pat Flannagan, will present the closing concert of the season Saturday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m., in Virginia Intermont's Harrison-Jones auditorium. The concert will feature music of American composers, from early American William Billings to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington.
