Jim White to Receive Bristol Mayor's Award of Distinction This Sunday |
 | | Jim White |
An independent 11-member panel has selected our own Jim White as one of three members of the local community to be recognized this year with the Bristol Mayor's Award of Distinction. Jim will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for this Sunday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m., at the Paramount Center for the Arts. We heartily invite all our FPC family to attend this event.
The Bristol Herald Courier noted in its report that Jim is "the man who was a driving force behind the new Bristol Ministry Mall." He serves on the board of the Ministry Mall, located on the campus of First Baptist Church downtown, where he was on-site and hands-on while directing the renovation of the building that houses it. He has long been an active volunteer with the Bristol emergency food pantry, Bristol Faith in Action, and Healing Hands Health Center, as well as with FPC.
The award program was established in 2008 to honor people and organizations that make significant contributions to the community. Sharon Randall, a nationally syndicated newspaper columnist whose work appears in the Herald Courier, will be the keynote speaker at Sunday's ceremony. There is no admission charge. For more information, call (423) 764-4171. |

Family-Style Korean Dinner in Kingsport This Saturday to Aid Greater Church Family |
What: Family-Style Korean Dinner
When: Saturday, April 21
Where: Fellowship Hall, FPC, 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport
Why: To aid Tri-City Korean Presbyterian Church
Most, if not all, of the Tri-City Korean Presbyterian Church building was lost in a recent fire, along with most of TKPC's equipment, resources, and materials. To help make up the difference between what their insurance covers and the rest of their losses, the members of that church will host a family-style Korean dinner in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport at 5:30 p.m., this Saturday, April 21. There will be no charge for the dinner, but donations would be appreciated.
Please call the Kingsport church office (423-245-0104, ext. 202) by noon on Friday, April 20, to make a dinner reservation. If you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to "TKPC." Checks mailed to or dropped off at the FPC Kingsport office by Friday, April 20, will be forwarded to Tri-City Korean Presbyterian Church. The FPC Kingsport address is 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660. |

Jan Karon to Speak at FPC Monday Night |
 | | Jan Karon |
Best-selling author Jan Karon will speak in our sanctuary this Monday, April 23, at 7:00 p.m., as part of the King College Buechner Institute's 2011-2012 Lecture Series. Karon is known for her Mitford series, set chiefly in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and her Father Tim series, which includes her most recent novel, In the Company of Others.
Quoted in the King College News, Katie Vande Brake, the dean of King's School of Arts and Sciences, said: "Jan Karon's Father Tim is beloved by many devoted readers. As the Mitford series has unfolded, the solutions this humble pastor finds for bewildering, amoral 21st-century problems give some simple answers to the WWJD question."
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dale Brown at 423-652-4156 or see www.buechnerinstitute.org. |

Spring Cleaning Day Next Saturday |
The Deacons' Household Task Team is sponsoring a Spring Cleaning Day next Saturday, April 28. We will send out teams from the church to members' houses to help with those tasks that need doing this time of year--clearing out clutter, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, doing yard work, and making minor repairs.
If you are interested in receiving a visit on Spring Cleaning Day, please call the church office or return a request form to the office.
Everyone who wants to join in a morning of service and fellowship can volunteer. Call the church office or sign up during worship this Sunday. Or just email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org. Put "Spring Cleaning" in the subject heading, and we will put you on the team! |

Nothing FISHy about Summer of Fellowship |
Join us this summer for fun and Bible study as we enjoy FISH, "fellowship in someone's home." Middle School FISH will meet on Tuesday nights, and High School FISH will meet on Thursday nights, each from 7:00 to 9:00, beginning Tuesday, May 29.
We are looking for families to host these gatherings throughout the summer. Hosts will provide a place to meet, a snack, and a fun activity, such as swimming, games, or a craft. A youth advisor will lead the Bible study.
If you would like to serve as a host, please contact Linda Welch (latwelch@aol.com) or Dave Welch (dwelch@fpcbristol.org) to reserve your night. - Katie Arnold, Director of Youth Ministries |
Church Youth Hungry to Help Others |
More than 30 youth of our church have signed up to participate in World Vision's 30-Hour Famine next weekend, April 28-29. They will go 30 hours without food while raising funds for projects in Ethiopia that will strengthen our connection to that region of the world.
According to World Vision, 925 million people worldwide are hungry. Every day, as many as 11,000 children under the age of five die from hunger-related causes. That's one child every eight seconds. To save as many lives as possible, hundreds of thousands of compassionate students every year take on the challenge of the 30-Hour Famine. They go without food for 30 hours. They learn what it takes to overcome hunger. And they raise funds to help feed hungry children and families around the world. They make a difference.
Every $30 our young people raise can help feed and care for a child for a month. And because the Famine is powered by World Vision, our youth are not only feeding children for today but also helping them and their families overcome poverty for a lifetime. |

Every year we look forward to honoring the achievements of the new graduates among us. Please call the church office if you or a member of your family will be graduating from high school, college, or any other educational or training program this spring. The information we need for our recognition efforts is the following: student name, current (not future) school or program, graduation date, degree earned, and field. Thank you for your help!

From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes | |
Music Participants: April 22: Sanctuary Choir; April 29: King College Symphonic Choir, Jubilate Youth Choir.
 | | K. Lee Scott |
Sunday's Music: The text of the Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Day by Day," is attributed to Richard of Chichester (1197-1253), a noted scholar and cleric who was venerated by succeeding generations for his faith and humility. The current English version of the text was first published in a collection in 1931; whether it is truly Richard's matters not, as it is a genuine prayer of humility, asking for wisdom, love, and understanding in the realization of the marvelous "benefits which [Christ] hast won for us." The musical setting is by K. Lee Scott (b. 1950), who lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama, and has written many hymns and anthems widely used by the church.
Choir Awards Dinner: The music ensembles involving children and youth will celebrate all of their accomplishments at our annual choir awards dinner Wednesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All participants should have received a reservation postcard in the mail. Please return it as soon as possible. You can mail it or drop it in an offering plate, or you can call or email your response to the Feys.
Arts Series: It's not too early to make sure you have the final Arts Series program date on your calendar! On Sunday, May 20, the Russian vocal ensemble LYRA will return to Bristol and our series with a varied program of Russian sacred music and folk songs. |
