Ethiopia Campaign Makes Progress |
 | | A student of Berhane Yesus Elementary School. |
Our monthlong effort to raise funds for Berhane Yesus Elementary School is bearing fruit. To date we have received $7,153 in gifts and pledges toward this mission. We celebrate this progress, which will fund nearly one-third of the next school year.
If you have not yet made a commitment to this effort, please pray about doing so. A gift or pledge of $87 will fund one day of school for the more than 600 children in Dembi Dollo. Our growing support continues to shine the light of Jesus in the minds and hearts of a new generation in Ethiopia. Thanks for your prayers and your gifts! |
Sharing Christ This Saturday |
Our first Sharing Christ volunteer opportunity in 2012 is coming up this Saturday, March 31. We need volunteers to make bag lunches, prep food, serve dinner, and clean up. We will make chicken casserole, marinated coleslaw, green beans, and dessert for 135 to 150 people. We will begin at 4:30 p.m. and work until we've finished cleaning up, around 7:00 p.m. The Sharing Christ Mission is located at Sixth and State Streets in Bristol.
This year, FPC takes on the responsibility of providing enough sandwich bread and snack cakes for at least 70 bag lunches on each of our service dates. We will also provide the bread or rolls for that Saturday's evening meal. If you would like to donate bread products or volunteer your time, please email Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv or call her at 423-968-3831 (home) or 276-628-7213 (work). |

We are thrilled to showcase the principal French horn with both the Symphony of the Mountains and the Knoxville Symphony.
Band students, particularly brass players, shouldn't miss this concert! Suggested ticket donation is $10 adults/$5 students. |

Boy Scout Troop 3 Yard Sale April 14 |
Mark your calendars for Boy Scout Troop 3's annual community yard sale, to be held Saturday, April 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the back parking lot by the Fellowship Hall.
The Scouts are raising money to pay for their transportation to the 50th anniversary of the West Point Camporee, April 26 to 29, and to cover the costs of the event itself.
The 50th anniversary Camporee is an invitation-only event that FPC's Scouts were blessed to be accepted to because we have two Troop 3 Eagle Scouts (also members of FPC) at West Point, Cadet Pvt. Drew Bailey and Cadet Pvt. Conor Haaser.
We welcome donations for this fundraising event from our church family. Please bring donated items to the Scout Hall, starting April 1. The room is open during church business hours. If you wish to deliver items at another time, please call the Scout Master, Karen Haaser, at 423-383-1287, or the event coordinator, Ralph Roark, at 423-276-8848. Troop 3 is very grateful to First Presbyterian Church for its support! |

Thanks to the kind folks with an eye to the church courtyard, we will have filled in some of the missing color around the cross and in the borders by Easter. But we believe the more the merrier! Please consider adding to the festive appearance of our courtyard by donating flowering annuals, and perhaps even giving Tom Daniel a hand with the planting. We could use more red, white, and purple around the cross and any color in the borders. For more information, please contact Tom at 423-764-7677. Thank you! |

John Yarrington |
Sunday's Music: The Sanctuary Choir will sing two anthems for Palm Sunday; the first is "Fling Wide the Door." The text was written by Georg Weissel in the seventeenth century; it was translated from the German in 1978 by the American Lutheran hymn writer Gracia Grindal. The melody, by J. A Freylinghausen, was first published in 1704; the musical arrangement is by John Yarrington, who has served as a choir director in a number of significant Methodist churches, is on the faculty of Houston Baptist University, and serves as principal choir director at First Presbyterian Church of Houston. The text calls on us to open our lives and hearts to "the King of Glory," and the music captures the joyous nature of this possibility.
The second anthem, "Hosanna to the Son of David," is the part of the service usually sung by the congregation in the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving, which begins the communion service. The music is by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria (1549-1611). Victoria was a leading musician in the Counter-Reformation, which strove to produce music that was approachable and left the texts understandable, while maintaining high standards of artistic excellence. This brief anthem captures, like the first, the joyous nature of the text as we rejoice in "He that cometh in the name of the Lord!" |
