Weekday Study Opportunities for Adults

At First Presbyterian Church, learning is not limited to Sunday mornings. In addition to the Wednesday evening Adult Learning Program coordinated by Dave Welch (and following the weekly Fellowship Dinner in the Fellowship Hall), there are at least two opportunities for adults to meet for study and discussion each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The list below describes groups for individuals and couples, men and women. If you don't see a time or a group that meets your needs, please contact Dave at 423-764-7176 or dwlech@fpcbristol.org.

Tuesday

Heart to Heart Women's Inductive Bible Study with Betsy Turnbull meets first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in Room 123.

Presbyterian Women meet the first Tuesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in Room 123, first for planning, then for Bible study, then for lunch together.

Wednesday

Heart to Heart Ladies' Bible Study with Lynette Wallen meets weekly at 9:30 a.m. in Room 123. Child care is provided, if you advise the church of your need ahead of time.

Women's Bible Study and Small Group with Betty Millard meets weekly at 1:00 p.m. in Room 117.

Thursday

Men's Bible Study with Gordon Turnbull meets weekly at 7:00 a.m. in the parlor to discuss upcoming sermon texts.

Thursday Noon Bible Study for any and all interested folks meets weekly with Gordon at Java J's.

Thursday Evening Small Group, formerly the Monday Evening Small Group, meets weekly at 7:00 p.m. in members' homes. It is open to all adults. For more information, contact Tammy Connolly at 423-968-3831.

And that's not all!

Saturday

Men's Breakfast and Bible Study meets on the first Saturday of every month at 8:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Men gather to feast figuratively and literally.

Fat-Free? Try Guilt-Free!

The senior and junior high youth groups will work together this Sunday, January 29, to make pizzas to raise funds for their summer mission and camp trips. The senior high group is preparing for a mission trip to Urban Promise, in Trenton, NJ, and the junior high group for camp at Great Escape.

The youth will not only assemble your pizzas but also deliver them to you. While their pizzas may contain the same ingredients as the commercial kind, they are for such good causes that do not fall into the category of guilty pleasures. Please place your order by Sunday morning by contacting Dave Welch at 423-764-7176 or dwelch@fpcbristol.org. Thank you for helping our youth achieve their goals!

On Wednesday's Menu: Fellowship and Family Promise

Did you know that, as you read this, more than 100 children in our local schools are homeless? Homeless children and their parents struggle to maintain a secure life together. Come to the Adult Learning program, following the Fellowship Dinner Wednesday, February 1, and learn from Gordon Turnbull how Family Promise of Bristol will use the hospitality of congregations like ours to keep children and parents together while they find stable housing.

Music Notes

Music Participants: January 29: Sanctuary Choir; Sanctuary Bells.

Sunday's Music: In the early years of the nineteenth century, a form of musical notation called shape note (because each note of the scale had a different shape) was developed in New England to combat musical illiteracy. The related musical style, often of a rugged nature, became popular and survived well into the twentieth century in southern Appalachia. Most of the related tunes and often the words of hymns from this tradition were anonymously written. Two of the best known are "What Wondrous Love Is This" and the tune we traditionally use to John Newton's words, "Amazing Grace." The Sanctuary Choir anthem this week is an arrangement of a hymn from that tradition, "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship." Uniquely, the author and composer are both known; the words are by George Askins and the music is by William Moore. The choral arrangement is by John Carter (b. 1930); Carter served for a number of years as Director of Music at University Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio, and has published hundreds of choral works throughout an extended career. The musical setting maintains the rugged character of the original, and in the tradition of shape-note singing, has no accompanying instruments.

Arts Series: Mark your calendars now for the next program in our Arts Series! Organist and pianist Jeremy Filsell will present an interesting program on Sunday, February 26, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Making use of both our wonderful Steinway piano and Randall Dyer pipe organ, he will play Bach and Rachmaninoff on each instrument and throw in some Gershwin and Duruflé for good measure! Suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults; students will be admitted free of charge. This program is jointly sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia chapter of the American Guild of Organists. - Steve & Vicki Fey
