International Star to Shine at Sunday's Art Series Opener

eugenia zukermanTo the great excitement of music lovers throughout the Tri-Cities area, internationally renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman will open our FPC 2011-2012 Arts Series this Sunday, November 6, at 3:00 p.m. Milana Strezeva, a founding member of the Manhattan Piano Trio, will accompany her.

Zukerman is a true Renaissance woman. While maintaining an international concert calendar with more than thirty performances annually, she has delivered distinguished performances as an arts administrator, author, educator, Internet entrepreneur, and journalist. In demand from New York to China as an orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist, Zukerman has been praised by The New York Times for her performances: "Her musicianship is consummate, her taste immaculate and her stage presence a sheer pleasure." She has enjoyed musical collaborations with Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the Shanghai String Quartet, and fellow flutists Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway. This season, she made her heralded debut at the prestigious Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

As a recitalist, Zukerman has been lauded not only for her playing, but also for her adventurous programming. As The Sunday Telegram observed, "Few major instrumentalists offer anything comparable to the intelligence and breadth of programming that she brings to her concerts, and this one was no exception." The Capital Times concurred, "What made this concert so noteworthy was not only the unusual music that Zukerman played with world-class virtuosity and musicality, but also her presentation and stage presence."

The Arts Series of the First Presbyterian Church strives to share with the community events that enrich and inspire the life of the people of Bristol, share our unique and marvelous facilities, and encourage the artistically gifted of our region and beyond. Admission is a suggested donation of $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students.

Our Ethiopia Mission Team Leaves in January

soccer ballFirst Presbyterian Church's Ethiopia mission team leaves in January! Trudy McFerrin and Peggy Hill will be visiting Berhane Yesus Elementary School in Dembi Dollo as well as other missional programs that FPC has supported in the past. PC(USA) missionaries Michael and Rachel Weller will host the team for part of their travel.

In preparation for the trip, the team earnestly requests your prayers for God's guidance, discernment, and grace for meeting the needs of our missional partners. Trudy and Peggy would also like to carry an abundance of pens (ballpoint or gel), pencils (No. 2 lead), and playground and soccer balls (all sizes) for the 600 schoolchildren at Berhane Yesus. If you would like to donate any of these items, you are welcome to deposit them in the little red house outside the Fellowship Hall anytime during the month of November.

May you be blessed for your continuing generosity to those in need!

Thank You, Trunk-or-Treaters!
story family
Good grief, Charlie Brown! Brandon and Mariel Story and their son, Penn, turned out in full Halloween mode.

Despite the unseasonable weather, more than 400 friends and neighbors came out to enjoy a night of fellowship and fun at our Fall Festival with Trunk or Treat last Sunday. The front parking lot looked very festive, with 15 tricked-out vehicle trunks, costumed children and adults, and fall-themed decorations.

Thank you to everyone who helped set up for (or clean up after!) the event, decorated cars, passed out candy, served food, or ran games. What a great outreach this was to our community! The church staff greatly appreciates all the volunteers. Without their willingness to serve, our festival would not have been such a success. ~ Cathy Newton

For the safety of our children, please remember to sign your child in and out of Sunday School. Sign-in sheets are located at the Children's Ministries' registration table before Sunday School and will be in the classrooms afterwards. If you have not registered your child for Sunday School, you will find the necessary form at the registration table.

Our Babies Need Your TLC!

Our nursery needs volunteers to care for our babies during the 8:30 a.m. Sunday service. Volunteers may serve only once or as often as they like. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Cathy Newton or Debbie Pfeifer.

Call for Cleaning and Construction Volunteers

The Bristol Ministry Mall needs your help on two projects. On Saturday, November 5, we will have a workday at the new location, 21 Washington Street (between First Baptist Church and the train station). We will be cleaning the building out before construction on the interior begins. Bring brooms, mops, buckets, work gloves, and anything else you'll need. Be prepared to dispose of unneeded items.

Soon after, we will begin a Habitat-style construction project: building a couple of interior walls, getting the restrooms into working order, and so forth. We expect to have a project manager, but we will need lots of laborers as well as some folks who can handle plumbing and electrical work under the supervision of qualified personnel.

To volunteer for either project, call Jim White at 423-764-3834 or 423-571-4449 as soon as possible.

Music Notes

Music Participants: November 6: Sanctuary Choir; November 13: Sanctuary Choir, Savior's Singers Children's Choir; November 20: Sanctuary Choir, Jubilate Youth Choir.

Sunday's Music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "God of Love," is an arrangement of an anthem by Quirino Gasparini, an Italian composer of the eighteenth century who wrote works primarily for the church. The original Latin text related to the passion narrative; this arrangement by Mark Schweizer sets an English communion text that is Trinitarian in nature, reminding us that it is God's own self that was sacrificed for us and provides the feast at the table. The elegant and understated music is a perfect vehicle for the sentiments expressed in the words.

Arts Series: Don't forget that our first program is this Sunday, November 6, at 3:00 p.m.! World-renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman will present a marvelous program, accompanied by pianist Milana Strezeva. Suggested ticket donation is $15 adults/$5 students age 6 through college.

Christmas Pageant: Parents, it's hard to believe, but our first Christmas pageant rehearsal (for costume fitting and an initial run-through) will take place Wednesday, November 16, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the regular Wednesday night programming. Cherub Choir and Savior's Singers Children's Choir kids will participate. If your child would like to take part in the Christmas pageant but hasn't been able to come to choir, it's not too late! Contact us for more information. ~ Steve & Vicki Fey
