Remembering the Saints on Wednesday, November 2

This week's Wednesday evening gathering provides the opportunity to thank God for the lives of the faithful ones who rest in God's eternal care. Our All Saints Worship will follow the fellowship supper, with worship beginning in the Sanctuary at approximately 6:20 p.m. We will remember particularly those who have died in our church in the past twelve months, as well as others whose lives of faith have strengthened and blessed us. Please plan to share in this meaningful worship together, and invite others for whom it may be a blessing.

Trunk or Treat This Sunday

trunk or treat logoIt's time to perfect your plans for decorating your car trunk! Our Fall Festival with Trunk or Treat will be held this Sunday, October 30, beginning at 6:00 p.m. At last year's event, our first, 250 of our neighbors joined us in the front parking lot to enjoy a great evening of fun and fellowship. This year we add experience to craftiness! You can help us put on an even better festival by showing off your decorated car trunk, donating candy, serving food, or helping with games for the kids. It's a great way to reach out to our community as well as enjoy the company of our own church kids!

You can still sign up to help out. The sign-up sheet is on the Children's Ministries' registration table, and the candy donation car is next to it. If you have any questions or would like to reserve a place for your car, please contact Cathy Newton at 423-764-7176 or at cnewton@fpcbristol.org.

International Star to Open FPC Arts Series Next Sunday

eugenia zukermanInternationally renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman opens our FPC 2011-2012 Arts Series next Sunday, November 6, at 3:00 p.m. Milana Strezeva, a founding member of the Manhattan Piano Trio, will accompany her.

Zukerman is a true Renaissance woman. While maintaining an international concert calendar with more than thirty performances annually, she has delivered distinguished performances as an arts administrator, author, educator, Internet entrepreneur, and journalist. In demand from New York to China as an orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist, Zukerman has been praised by The New York Times for her performances: "Her musicianship is consummate, her taste immaculate and her stage presence a sheer pleasure." She has enjoyed musical collaborations with Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the Shanghai String Quartet, and fellow flutists Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway. This season, she made her heralded debut at the prestigious Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

As a recitalist, Zukerman has been lauded not only for her playing, but also for her adventurous programming. As The Sunday Telegram observed, "Few major instrumentalists offer anything comparable to the intelligence and breadth of programming that she brings to her concerts, and this one was no exception." The Capital Times concurred, "What made this concert so noteworthy was not only the unusual music that Zukerman played with world-class virtuosity and musicality, but also her presentation and stage presence."

The Arts Series of the First Presbyterian Church strives to share with the community events that enrich and inspire the life of the people of Bristol, share our unique and marvelous facilities, and encourage the artistically gifted of our region and beyond. Admission is a suggested donation of $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students.

Brazil Scholarship Drive Under Way

brazilian boysWe have a rich opportunity to embody Christ's love and extend our commitment to the children of our partner church, Felipe Camarão in Natal, Brazil. The Bethel School of IPI Felipe Camarão currently serves 134 children from prekindergarten through grade 5. A pledge of $35 per month provides a caring and stimulating classroom experience, plus a nutritious meal in the morning or midday-a great gift to this impoverished community.

Our church's support is the largest and most dependable contribution to this transformative opportunity for the children and families of Felipe Camarão. Commitment forms are available through the church office. Thanks for your steadfast support of this mission partnership.

Support Our Youth Groups and Operation Christmas Child

As the holidays approach, the youth of our church are preparing Christmas cheer for other children. You can support them in this effort by donating small gifts (or shoe boxes to put these gifts in), which they will send on to Operation Christmas Child. Please drop your donation off at the church before October 31.

Here are some gift ideas:

Toys

Small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch-A-Sketch-like toys that light up or make noise (and extra batteries), Slinkies

Heart to Heart Steering Committee Meets Wednesday

The Heart to Heart Steering Committee will meet Wednesday, November 2, at 4:15 p.m., in room 117. The church will not be providing child care during this meeting.

Call for Cleaning and Construction Volunteers

The Bristol Ministry Mall needs your help on two projects. On Saturday, November 5, we will have a workday at the new location, 21 Washington Street (between First Baptist Church and the train station). We will be cleaning the building out before construction on the interior begins. Bring brooms, mops, buckets, work gloves, and anything else you'll need. Be prepared to dispose of unneeded items.

Soon after, we will begin a Habitat-style construction project: building a couple of interior walls, getting the restrooms into working order, and so forth. We expect to have a project manager, but we will need lots of laborers as well as some folks who can handle plumbing and electrical work under the supervision of qualified personnel.

To volunteer for either project, call Jim White at 423-764-3834 or 423-571-4449 as soon as possible.

Music Notes

Music Participants: October 30: Sanctuary Choir; Lenita Thibault, soloist.

Sunday's Music: The last time our church undertook a read-through of the Bible, Sanctuary Choir member and composer Ann Holler was inspired by the words of Habakkuk to compose two anthems. One of these is Sunday's anthem, "God, the Lord, Is My Strength," drawn from selected verses of the third chapter of Habakkuk. It calls out for God's mercy, remembers God's power, rejoices in God, and recognizes God's strength even in times of great adversity. In these uncertain times, Habakkuk's words remain relevant.

Arts Series Program: We kick off our Arts Series with a fabulous program on Sunday, November 6, but funding for the series is ongoing. If you haven't made your donation to the series yet, we invite you to do so as soon as you are able. Make your checks out to the church, and please put "Arts Series" on the memo line. We thank you for helping us to share our marvelous facilities with people of our region and beyond.

Many Voices, One Song: In early September we sang "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" as we kicked off the "Many Voices, One Song" campaign leading to the publication of the new song resource for the PCUSA. This Sunday, marketing director Meg Flannagan is asking churches everywhere to sing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," not only because it is Reformation Sunday but also to join with Presbyterians everywhere in uniting our voices in song. Steve asks for continued prayers as he travels to Louisville in November for the next-to-last meeting of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song. ~ Vicki & Steve Fey
