Celebrate World Communion Sunday |
This Sunday, October 2, First Presbyterian Church will join together in a single worship service to celebrate World Communion Sunday. This day emphasizes the global church and the fellowship we share with followers of Jesus around the world. Our single combined worship service will feature contributions from the breadth of our church's rich ministries of music, as well as the celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
Please note the changes in our schedule for October 2:
- No Cherub Choir rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m.: Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m.: Worship in the Sanctuary
Make plans to join us on this festive day of worship, and bring friends and neighbors to join in the celebration! |
Heart to Heart Fall Harvest Take Treats, Heart, to Nursing Home Residents |
Join the Heart to Heart women's ministry as we gather this Saturday, October 1, to prepare for a morning of "bearing fruit" at a local nursing home. We'll meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a light breakfast, followed by a devotional and tips on visiting nursing home residents. After assembling treat bags to share with those whom we visit, we will head out in teams to the nursing home. We'll return to the church by 11:30 a.m.
We're collecting items for the treat bags for the nursing home residents. Some suggestions: sugarfree candies, note cards, greeting cards, pens or pencils, small puzzle books, pocket-sized tissue packs, trial-sized lotions or hand sanitizers, lip balm or Chapstick.
Call the church office (423-764-7176) or email Betsy Turnbull (gbturnbull@btes.tv) to let us know you can attend. Child care will be available at the church; please help us prepare by calling the church office to let us know how many children to expect. |
Bloodmobile at FPC on Wednesday |
The Marsh Blood Services Bloodmobile will be in the front parking lot of First Presbyterian Church from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5. Please plan to participate in this important service to our community. You can help ensure that blood and blood products are available when you or someone you know needs them.
The blood donation process takes less than one hour from start to finish. The actual drawing of blood typically takes between eight and ten minutes.
As a small token of appreciation for your gift of life, you will receive complimentary refreshments and a free t-shirt or other item after your donation. |
Presbyterian Women Resume Meetings |
After the summer off, it's time for the Presbyterian Women to resume our monthly meetings. Circle will meet at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, and we will discuss a new project. Then we'll look forward to Gordon's leading our Bible study at 11:30. Lunch will follow. You can make lunch reservations with the church office.
Please make every effort to be there. All women are welcome. We need YOU! |
Look Out! Here Comes Trunk or Treat! |
Fall is in the air, and that means that our Fall Festival with Trunk or Treat is drawing near. On Sunday, October 30, at 6:00, we will gather in the front parking lot for another great evening of fun and fellowship. We are looking for folks who would like to show off their decorated car trunks, donate candy, serve food, or help with games for the kids. What a great way to reach out to our community as well as enjoy our own church kids!
Mark your calendars and be on the lookout for the candy donation trunk that will be located next to the Children's Ministries' sign-in table. If you have any questions or would like to reserve a place for your car, please contact Cathy Newton at the church office or at cnewton@fpcbristol.org. |
Seeking Interest in Soup Kitchen Service |
The United Company's Soup Kitchen currently serves more than 500 meals each weekday to our neighbors in need. In response to growing need, this ministry hopes to double the number of clients served. To do so, it seeks to increase its pool of volunteers.
Our Evangelism & Outreach Committee would like to find out who in our church currently serves or would be willing to serve a two-hour shift on a weekday morning. Please reply to Gordon Turnbull by email (gturnbull@fpcbristol.org) or by calling 423-764-7176. |

Our church needs a few good men and women to help maintain our beautiful courtyard. Many weddings and other events are scheduled over the next several weeks, and we want to look our best for our guests and congregants. We need extra hands to trim, prune, and weed one or two hours a week. If your schedule is too full for a weekly commitment, we would welcome you with open arms whenever you can manage it. We provide the tools. For more information, call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677. |

Music Notes | |
Music Participants: As we celebrate in communion with Christians around the world this Sunday, we draw on the rich diversity of musical traditions available to us. From various African languages in the anthems to Korea, Brazil, Spain, the Moravians, and the gospel tradition, World Communion Sunday is a day to remember our sisters and brothers in other places. Leading us musically will be the Sanctuary Choir, Jubilate Youth Choir and Youth Bells, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, Songhee Han, Abbey Kitts, Shannan Miller, Guilherme Müller, Joel Newton, Brandon Story, Jacob Strang, and Jesse Strang.
Arts Series: Our 2011-2012 Arts Series promises to be spectacular, with an incredible lineup of local as well as internationally recognized talent. Beginning with world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman on Sunday, November 6, and concluding in May with the return of the Russian vocal ensemble LYRA, these are programs not to be missed. Donations to the series are being gratefully received. When you make your check out to the church, be sure and put "Arts Series" on the memo line.
Cherub Choir Reminder: Parents, don't forget that the Cherub Choir (age 4-grade 1) will not rehearse this Sunday, October 2, due to the altered worship schedule. ~ Vicki & Steve Fey |
