Heart to Heart Fall Harvest Take Treats, Heart, to Nursing Home Residents |
Join the Heart to Heart women's ministry as we gather on Saturday, October 1, to prepare for a morning of "bearing fruit" at a local nursing home. We'll meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall for a light breakfast, followed by a devotional and tips on visiting nursing home residents. After assembling treat bags to share with those whom we visit, we will head out in teams to the nursing home. We'll return to the church by 11:30 a.m.
We're collecting items for the treat bags for the nursing home residents. Some suggestions: sugarfree candies, note cards, greeting cards, pens or pencils, small puzzle books, pocket-sized tissue packs, trial-sized lotions or hand sanitizers, lip balm or Chapstick.
Call the church office (423-764-7176) or email Betsy Turnbull (gbturnbull@btes.tv) to let us know you can attend. Child care will be available at the church; please help us prepare by calling the church office to let us know how many children to expect. |
Looking Ahead to World Communion Sunday |
On Sunday, October 2, First Presbyterian Church will join together in a single worship service to celebrate World Communion Sunday. This day emphasizes the global church and the fellowship we share with followers of Jesus around the world. Our single combined worship service will feature contributions from the breadth of our church's rich ministries of music, as well as the celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
Please note the changes in our schedule for October 2:
- No Cherub Choir rehearsal
- 9:30 a.m.: Sunday School
- 10:30 a.m.: Worship in the Sanctuary
Make plans to join us on this festive day of worship, and bring friends and neighbors to join in the celebration! |
Wanting to Serve with Our Youth Ministry? |
Last week we celebrated the service of Chad and Jen Carpenter in our church's youth ministry. We are glad to report that despite their transition, our youth ministry continues vigorously. We are grateful that Dan Kreiss is coordinating this important ministry and outreach, and a number of folks have stepped up to offer help and support. If you are interested in helping to serve with this ministry, please call the church office (423-764.7176) and we will be glad to welcome your support. |
Seeking Interest in Soup Kitchen Service |
The United Company's Soup Kitchen currently serves more than 500 meals each weekday to our neighbors in need. In response to growing need, this ministry hopes to double the number of clients served. To do so, it seeks to increase its pool of volunteers.
Our Evangelism & Outreach Committee would like to find out who in our church currently serves or would be willing to serve a two-hour shift on a weekday morning. Please reply to Gordon Turnbull by email (gturnbull@fpcbristol.org) or by calling 423-764-7176. |
Skinny on the Ice Cream Social |

If you bring homemade, you can enter the judged contest to win a grand prize, selected especially for you. Store-bought ice cream won't be eligible for the contest.

Our church needs a few good men and women to help maintain our beautiful courtyard. Many weddings and other events are scheduled over the next several weeks, and we want to look our best for our guests and congregants. We need extra hands to trim, prune, and weed one or two hours a week. If your schedule is too full for a weekly commitment, we would welcome you with open arms whenever you can manage it. We provide the tools. For more information, call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677. |

Music Notes | |
Music Participants: September 18, Sanctuary Choir.
Sunday's Music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "My Song Shall Be Alway of the Loving-kindness," is a lovely setting of the first verse of Psalm 89. Little is available concerning the composer, Godfrey Sampson; he produced a number of choral and instrumental works in the 1930s and 1940s, working in Great Britain. The text is the Myles Coverdale translation from the sixteenth century, which predates the King James Version. His translation of the psalms was used in the English Prayer Book, and as a result his versions have been set many times, well into the twentieth century, by numerous composers. Sampson elegantly sets forth the words of the psalm, that we will show in all times and places the truth of God's care and kindness.
Cherub Choir Parents: Parents (or grandparents), please remember to sign up for your turn helping with the Cherub Choir rehearsals (age 4 through grade 1, meeting on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.). Your help is always greatly appreciated.
Sanctuary Choir Retreat: The Sanctuary Choir will be on retreat Saturday, September 24. from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the King College chapel. The purpose of this annual event is to get a jumpstart on Advent and Christmas music. This year the choir will sing Benjamin Britten's lovely Ceremony of Carols, accompanied by harp, on Sunday, December 11, during the 11:00 a.m. service. If you would like to join us, let us know! ~ Vicki & Steve Fey |
