In Appreciation of Chad Carpenter

As Chad Carpenter leaves our church staff to serve the football program at UVA-Wise, we will mark the occasion with a special moment in each worship service this Sunday, September 11. A reception after the 11:00 service will provide church members and friends the opportunity to express their thanks and best wishes.

We deeply appreciate Chad's 12 years of service to our congregation, most especially to our young people in his capacity of Director of Student Ministries, but we solace ourselves with the knowledge that he and Jen and their son Graham will continue to be part of our church family.

Chad will serve UVA-Wise as offensive-line coach as well as strength and conditioning coach. We have no doubt that he will continue to influence those in his care and to witness to his love for Jesus Christ in this new capacity. Our firsthand experience of his character, dedication, talent, and sense of humor makes us certain of his continued success in the wider community. Our prayers and best wishes for his and his family's ministries and happiness go with him.

FPC Needs Gardeners
Our church needs a few good men and women to help maintain our beautiful courtyard. Many weddings and other events are scheduled over the next several weeks, and we want to look our best for our guests and congregants. We need extra hands to trim, prune, and weed one or two hours a week. If your schedule is too full for a weekly commitment, we would welcome you with open arms whenever you can manage it. We provide the tools. For more information, call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677.
Music Notes

Music Participants: September 11: Sanctuary Choir; Songhee Han, piano.

Sunday's Anthem: In recognition of the tenth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, the Sanctuary Choir will sing "The Dream Isaiah Saw." The composer Glenn L. Rudolph set the text of Thomas Troeger's poem "Lion and Oxen Will Sleep in the Hay" (from Borrowed Light: Hymn Texts, Prayers, and Poems), inspired by the Isaiah passage on the lion and the lamb. Troeger is a noted theologian and author of hymn texts who has taught at Colgate Rochester Divinity School and the Iliff School of Theology in Denver and is now on the faculty of Yale Divinity School. Rudolph has been active in choral music in the Pittsburgh area since 1978. He says of this piece: "I began composing "The Dream Isaiah Saw" near the end of July 2001 and finished it on September 30. We all know what happened in between. Like most of us, during the time immediately after September 11, I could do little more than make it through the minimum requirements of each day. When I did come back to finishing the piece, I was at once moved by the appropriateness of the words, and struck by the irony that I would be composing this piece at this time. Coincidence or divine providence, it was clear that "The Dream Isaiah Saw" should be dedicated to those who perished on September 11, 2001. Thomas Troeger's poem is a remarkable synthesis of the ancient prophet's vision and the circumstances of our present-day world." The anthem will be accompanied by both organ and piano, with Songhee Han on piano.

Youth Choir Schedule: The Jubilate Youth Choir (grades 6-12) will have regular rehearsals on September 11 and 18 (4:45-5:30), then will have an abbreviated rehearsal on September 25 (4:30-5:00) to allow participation in the all-church ice cream social that will begin at 5:00 p.m. ~ Steve & Vicki Fey
