Thanks and Godspeed, Chad Carpenter!

This Sunday, September 4, will be Chad Carpenter's last with us as our Director of Student Ministries. We deeply appreciate his 12 years of service to our congregation, most especially to our young people, but we solace ourselves with the knowledge that he and Jen and their son Graham will continue to be part of our church family.

We plan to mark the occasion with a special moment in each worship service the following Sunday, September 11. A reception after the 11:00 service that day will provide church members and friends the opportunity to express our thanks and best wishes.

Chad leaves us to serve the football program at UVA-Wise as offensive-line coach as well as strength and conditioning coach. Doubtless he will continue to influence those in his care, and to witness to his love for Jesus Christ in this new capacity. Our firsthand experience of his character, dedication, talent, and sense of humor makes us certain of his continued success in the wider community. Our prayers and best wishes for his and his family's ministries and happiness go with him.

Report from Bristol Faith in Action

Through July, BFIA served 1,570 households, thanks to you, your church, your many volunteers, and your support. Although that number is, surprisingly, down a bit from 2010, the amount of money needed to prevent eviction, to prevent disconnection of utilities, to provide food, and to get that life-essential prescription has risen by 5%.

Unfortunately, there is another statistic that continues to rise: the number of female-headed households. It is up by 8% so far this year; it was up by 12% last year. Nine out of ten of these households have at least one child, which means that those who are the most vulnerable continue to suffer the hardships of our economy.

The good news is that we have been able to provide $99,075 in financial support (in the form of vouchers), helping 315 households with rent or mortgage payments and 612 with their electricity bills, and providing 723 food vouchers, nearly 300 packs of diapers, and 400 personal care kits.

Without each of you and the support of the United Way, corporate grants, and private grants, little of this outreach ministry would be possible. I thank you and encourage you to keep Bristol Faith in Action in your prayers and to continue to support us through your many types of donations.

"For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." ( James 2:26) ~ Tyler Franklin, Executive Director, Bristol Faith in Action

Mowing Teams through September 10

September 1-3:     JB Madison & Dave Welch

September 7-10:   Brian Miller & Roger Sikorski

FPC Needs Gardeners
Our church needs a few good men and women to help maintain our beautiful courtyard. Many weddings and other events are scheduled over the next several weeks, and we want to look our best for our guests and congregants. We need extra hands to trim, prune, and weed one or two hours a week. If your schedule is too full for a weekly commitment, we would welcome you with open arms whenever you can manage it. We provide the tools. For more information, call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677.
Music Notes

Music Participants: September 4: Sanctuary Choir.

Children's Choirs: The children's choirs are off to a great start! Cherub Choir parents, don't forget that we will be asking you to take a turn as a choir parent during our Sunday morning rehearsals. If you would like to volunteer for a date, you may call us at the church office or email us at svfey@fpcbristol.org. By the time you read this, the second rehearsal for the Wednesday children's choir and handbell choir will have taken place. Regular Wednesday programming, with dinner and program after, will resume September 7.

"Many Voices, One Song": The marketing director for the new song resource for the PCUSA (our own Meg Flannagan) is asking PCUSA churches everywhere to join the "Many Voices, One Song" campaign. To kick off this campaign, we are all asked to sing "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" this Sunday, September 4, and "A Mighty Fortress" on Reformation Sunday, October 30. We will be asked to sing other hymns and songs as the year progresses, some perhaps that we have already sung as test hymns. To follow the progress of this resource (including color and title!), go to the website for the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song (PCOCS). Steve returns this week from one of the last four meetings of the PCOCS.

Sunday's Anthem: In the nineteenth century, Christians in England became intrigued by the hymn traditions of other European countries, and a wealth of translations were made of hymns that have now become classics. The most prolific and successful translator of German Christian song into English was Catherine Winkworth, whose The Chorale Book for England of 1863 contains many hymns that remain in the repertory today. The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "O Living Bread from Heaven," is her translation of a hymn by the seventeenth-century German pastor and poet Johann Rist, who lived and worked in the Hamburg area. For this arrangement, it has been set by American composer Gary Matheny to the American folk hymn tune, "Wedlock," which first appeared in the collection The Sacred Harp in 1844. ~ Vicki & Steve Fey
