Can a Quaker Life Style Make You a Better Presbyterian? |
I've long admired the Quakers, more formally known as the Society of Friends, thinking of them as a genuinely pious people, living simply with a no-frills life style. They have a deep concern for personal honesty and integrity, and their worship services can be periods of silent contemplation. They also believe that an "inner light" from God speaks directly to them, making unnecessary a formal set of beliefs to shape their theology.
Otherwise, what little I have known about them comes from my limited knowledge of William Penn and Benjamin Franklin, probably the best-known Quakers in colonial America. Our country has had two Quaker presidents; Herbert Hoover was one of these, and if you cannot recall the other, read on. When I saw a fairly recent little book, A Quaker Book of Wisdom: Life Lessons in Simplicity, Service, and Common Sense, I realized it was just what I needed to give me a better understanding of these interesting people. The author, Robert Lawrence Smith, is a lifelong Quaker with an ancestral background of several generations in that faith. He is the former headmaster of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., the nation's largest Quaker day school. Like a good Quaker he writes simply and clearly and fills his book with interesting illustrative stories.
Quakers are known more for their distinctive life style than for theological dogma; indeed, their seventeenth-century English founder, George Fox, was frequently jailed for his refusal to accede to traditional Protestant beliefs. Smith spells out this life style in ten chapters that speak to these qualities: silence, worship, truth, simplicity, conscience, nonviolence, service, business, education, and family. Each chapter is a stand-alone essay in which he explains the origin of each and how it is observed. The chapter on worship, for example, has given me the clearest view I've seen of just how Quakers worship and why silence is emphasized but is not all there is to worship. The chapter on truth excoriates Richard Nixon, our other Quaker president, because he lied. You'll learn a lot about Quaker practices from reading this book, and you'll also learn a lot more about their founder, George Fox, who was surely one of the most interesting figures of his age.
So what does a Presbyterian get from reading this book? First of all, you get a much clearer picture of this denomination than you had before. More importantly, you'll probably gain a real respect for their determination to live out these precepts. No, it hasn't made me wish to be a Quaker, but it has definitely encouraged me to think about the ten attributes of their style of living and to realize that I would be a much better Presbyterian if I conformed to them. And that's why I am recommending this book to you. Who knows: maybe the "Inner Light" can also shine upon Presbyterians and guide their conduct! Give it a try! |

Music Notes | |
Music Participants: August 21: Sanctuary Choir, soloist Rachel Barker; August 28: Sanctuary Choir. We are pleased that Rachel Barker will join us in worship on August 21. Rachel is a native of Bristol, VA, and a graduate of King College and Westminster Choir College. She sang with our Sanctuary Choir while she was at King.
Choirs Begin: Parents, it's that time of year again! The Cherub Choir (ages 4 through grade 1) will begin rehearsals Sunday, August 21, at 9:00 a.m., in the Children's Choir Room. Parent helpers are a necessity. There will be a sign-up sheet on the wall near the door. If every parent signs up for one Sunday between now and December, we should have enough help! On Wednesday, August 24, the Children's Handbells and Savior's Singers Children's Choir (both are for grades 2-5) will meet at 4:15 p.m. (bells) and 4:45 p.m. (choir). Also at 4:45 p.m., the Youth Bell Choir (grades 6-12) will begin ringing. PLEASE NOTE: Please pick up your children promptly at 5:30 on both August 24 and August 31. Our regular Wednesday schedule (dinner and program) will not begin until September 7. Jubilate Youth Choir (grades 6-12) will kick off the singing year Sunday, August 28, at 4:45 p.m., prior to youth fellowship activities.
Sunday's Music: For the second week in a row, the Sanctuary Choir anthem is an arrangement of a Shaker song, but this one is as vigorous as last week's was reflective. "Followers of the Lamb" invites believers to express their joy in their faith in the most joyous of singing and dancing. The arrangement is by Philip Dietterich, a retired Methodist church musician who spent most of his career serving a church in Westfield, New Jersey. In addition to the anthem, the solo "How Beautiful Are the Feet" from Handel's Messiah will be offered following the sermon. The passage of Isaiah 52:7 quoted by Paul in his letter to the Romans (Romans 10:15) is set in a quietly lyrical style. The melodic and rhythmic setting is intended to suggest the pastoral, using motifs often associated with shepherds and their music, implying the shepherding quality of those who share the gospel news. The postlude is an annual tradition, played on our first Sunday here in August of 1999. Vicki will play John Rutter's Toccata in Seven in celebration of the beginning of our 13th year of ministry at First Presbyterian Church. ~ Steve & Vicki Fey |
