| Heart-to-Heart Summer Small Group Bible Studies (Clusters) | |
We are planning another round of Heart-to-Heart clusters for late July and early August. Please consider hosting the event in your home or leading the Bible study. Hostesses can choose the date that suits them.
Clusters are an opportunity for women of the church and their friends to gather for fellowship and Bible study one morning or evening. This is not an ongoing gathering but a one-time, low-commitment, high-reward opportunity for Christian sharing and growth. If you can provide the location or the study leadership for a cluster meeting in late July or early August, please contact Vivian Calcote at 423-968-9064 or calcote@charter.net. Look for dates and more details coming soon.

Is There a God? And Does He Care
|
This week we have a special treat for you: two books to choose from! Both are by the same accomplished author and on a common subject. Perhaps this calls for an explanation.
For many years Reynolds Price, who died a few months ago, has been recognized as one of our most distinguished Southern writers. The author of thirty-five books of poetry and prose, he was also the James B. Duke Professor of English at Duke University. In the spring of 1984 Price was suddenly afflicted with a serious physical disability that was ultimately diagnosed as cancer of the spine. A series of operations followed, accompanied by increasing anxiety for his survival and the onset of constant pain. After years of agony the cancer was stopped, but Price was left with permanent paralysis in the lower part of his body. He went through a long period of difficult physical and psychological rehabilitation and was finally able to resume his career as a teacher and writer, although confined to a wheelchair. As a part of his restoration he determined to write an account, not simply of physical recovery but of how through God's presence and help he was able to regain a sense of his former being. In his preface, he states that the book "is offered first to others in physical or psychic trial of their own, to their families and other helpers and then to the curious reader who waits for his or her own devastation." Its title is A Whole New Life: An Illness and a Healing. It is a beautifully written account of physical, psychological, and spiritual rehabilitation, but this is only half the story.
Some years later Price received a letter from one Jim Fox, a young medical student who had been forced to withdraw from his training because of the recurrence of cancer. He had read Price's book and needed help -- spiritual understanding more than physical encouragement. Price called it the most "compelling communication" he had ever received; he knew he must respond. He contacted Fox immediately by telephone but felt that a more substantive action was necessary. For months he struggled with a manuscript while Fox slowly declined, ultimately passing away and leaving Price, as he stated it, "in the baffling silence of one hand beating the empty air -- my lone hand oaring in the wake of a friend's departure." That manuscript was completed and published as Letter to a Man in the Fire: Does God Exist and Does He Care?
These two books stand together as literary and philosophical masterpieces contemplating the presence of God in our lives when disaster strikes and of the way events can lead to what Price termed the "astonishing grace of God." Price writes with a realistic open eye -- no syrupy sentiment here -- and he is at times angry and belligerent as well as funny. The second book contains an astonishing bibliography of readings and musical selections that might be helpful for those in pain. Read one or read both; you will find them both encouraging and insightful.

Music Notes

Music Participants: June 26: Sanctuary Choir; July 3: Jordan Pennington, soloist.
Sunday's Anthem: The Sanctuary Choir anthem this week, "Awake, My Heart," won an award from the American Guild of Organists in 1957 as an outstanding new work, and it has remained a part of the core sacred choral repertoire ever since. Composer Jane Marshall has had a long and distinguished career as a composer, author, and teacher working in the Dallas area. For this anthem, Marshall set a translation of a text by the seventeenth-century German pastor and hymn writer, Paul Gerhardt. Gerhardt worked and lived through the privations of the Thirty Years War, yet this text is a joyous celebration of the protection and nurture given us by God. It seemed a good anthem to complete the program year of the Sanctuary Choir, as they take a five-week break from leading weekly worship.
Montreat: By the time you read this, our time at the first week of the Montreat Worship and Music Conference will be almost over. We appreciate the prayers of the congregation, and we know the children and youth attending this conference will have had a wonderful experience. Our "experienced" conferees (those who have attended at least once) are Alison and Blake Looney, Maleah Newton, Annie Osborne, and Madison Ratliff. New attendees this year are Daniel and Ginny Osborne and Maria and Rosa Poteat. Many thanks to Ray and Lilly Osborne for serving as chefs for the week, and to Lorri Looney and Sherry Ratliff, who helped transport, plan meals, and chaperone for a day or two. If you haven't made plans to drive down to one of the Montreat worship services, it's not too late! Week 2 of the conference begins Sunday night, June 26, and daily worship is at 11:00 a.m. in Anderson Auditorium. Conference preacher Dr. Tom Troeger is widely known, not only in Presbyterian circles but also throughout the country. In addition to preaching and writing books, he is also a noted hymn-text author. We sang one of his texts on Pentecost Sunday (#131, "Wind Who Makes All Winds that Blow"). It would be well worth your time to get a carful of folks and drive down, not only to hear this fine preacher but also to experience worship at Montreat.
Programs of Note: One of England's finest concert organists, Dame Gillian Weir, will present a concert on Friday, July 1, at 8:00 p.m., at Boone United Methodist Church in Boone, NC. There is a suggested ticket donation of $10. That same night, here in our sanctuary, King College's second annual Choral Arts Camp will finish their week with a program at 7:00 p.m. ~ Steve & Vicki Fey
