Fairmount School Grateful to FPC

Dear Friends,

Please accept my sincere thanks for your dedication in providing classroom snack food to our less fortunate students at Fairmount Elementary School. A popular proverb states, "It takes a village to raise a child." Research proves that when the basic needs of shelter, food, and clothing are met, student focus turns to learning and not their circumstances.

All students at Fairmount were recipients of a fresh fruit and vegetable snack program throughout the current school year, on an average of two to three days per week, made possible by a federal grant awarded to the BTCS School Nutrition Program. First Presbyterian snacks were available on alternate days to students that could not provide a snack from home or purchase one from the school cafeteria. Before the snack effort of the church was organized, many kind-hearted Fairmount teachers were personally purchasing classroom snacks for their students of need.

Please know that I have been asked on numerous occasions by students and members of the Fairmount staff to relay messages of gratitude for the church's generosity. I am very grateful for your caring spirit and thoughtfulness in reaching out to Fairmount students and for being an active part of the "village" as we, as a community, strive to raise our children in Bristol. Your support of BTCS Community Outreach is most appreciated!

Respectfully,

Kay Ward

FPC Hosts Reverse Mission Team June 16-21

Larry and Courtney Sharrett, our members in mission with Athletes in Action in Bulgaria, will be leading a Bulgarian basketball team on a Reverse Mission Trip to the United States in June. The group plans to be in Bristol from Thursday, June 16, to Tuesday, June 21.

The trip offers the contingent of twelve basketball players, four coaches, and eleven AIA staffers the chance for competition and interaction with American teams, as well as an opportunity to share the evangelistic message of Athletes in Action., An important gift to this group will be the experience of Christian fellowship in our country. Many will remember that we welcomed a similar group from Bulgaria in 2007.

First Presbyterian Church will host a luncheon for our guests on Saturday, June 18. Local supporters and other friends of the Sharretts will enjoy an update on their mission and the chance to greet our guests personally. The team anticipates playing an exhibition game at King College that evening.

We are seeking hosts for members of our welcoming group. If you are able and willing to share your hospitality, please contact local coordinator Charles Webb (cwebb1201@gmail.com or 423-247-7557) or Gordon Turnbull (gturnbull@fpcbristol.org or 423-764-7176).

Gifts Welcomed at Sharing Christ Worship Center

A recent contact from Tom and Barbara Knoll has apprised us of a need at Sharing Christ Worship Center, the downtown mission where we regularly help to serve the Saturday evening meal.

Roof replacement and other necessary repairs to the building at the corner of Sixth and State streets has created a need for $11,000 in support. Those who would like to offer financial support for this cause are invited to contact the Knolls at P.O. Box 34887, Bristol, TN 37625, or 423-968-7374.

Tom Knoll grew up in First Presbyterian Church, the son of the late Tom and Edith Knoll. Sharing Christ has offered a ministry of food and worship to the poor in Bristol for more than 20 years. Our Session commends this cause for your prayerful consideration.

E&O Committee Collecting Personal Care Kits for Bristol Faith in Action

The Evangelism and Outreach committee is requesting donations of personal care kits for distribution by Bristol Faith in Action. We are looking for the following items in regular or large size (not travel size):

  • shampoo
  • soap
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • comb or brush
  • razor
  • small can of shaving cream
  • washcloth

An emery board, nail clippers, or lotion would also be useful. Some kits could be tailored to men and others to women.

When you have packed your donated items in a one-gallon Ziploc or other clear, sealable bag, drop your kit off at the Little Red House. Members of the Evangelism and Outreach committee will deliver the kits to Bristol Faith in Action.

Working and Talking Together to Have a Happy Marriage

toward commitment

It's the month of June! And you know what that means: wedding bells will be ringing across our land. But we must temper that happy thought with the realization that statistics suggest that about half these marriages will end in divorce. And if you are of the opinion that Christian couples fare better in matrimony, think again. Their divorce rates are about the same as all other couples.

Perhaps this makes it a good time to introduce our Book of the Week: Toward Commitment: A Dialogue About Marriage, by Diane and John Rehm. But don't assume this is just another marriage manual with the usual platitudes about how two newlyweds can live happily ever after. Their book has an interesting twist to its approach. Read on.

Evidence indicates that if married couples are able to talk together, sharing their contrasting viewpoints and differences, and truly want to save their marriage, they have a far greater chance of achieving wedded bliss. And this is exactly what Diane and John set forth and demonstrate in this volume. Each of its twenty-seven short chapters is an exercise in dialogue. Here's how it works: in each chapter they take up a topic, say the problem of money or of anger, and one states his/her initial position, followed by the other. Then they have a dialogue in which they talk back and forth about their contrasting positions and attempt to find common ground for resolution. These many chapters concern themselves about some of the typical issues and problems that couples face: in-laws, money, parenting, vacations, religious beliefs, professional needs, the "third person," and others.

Diane and John begin their book with two introductory chapters in which they share what were their initial assumptions and expectations in entering marriage and what each found most attractive about the other. Diane was a young divorcee seeking greater warmth and personal intimacy after a cold first marriage, while John, who was somewhat older, had been building a successful career as a lawyer and was assumed by some of his friends likely to become an "old bachelor." Neither recognized the considerable differences between them, and their early years were marked by difficult periods of adjustment during which they gradually learned how to talk together and to find mutual understanding. This is not a "religious" approach to marriage in the narrow sense, but there is much here that Christian couples can find helpful as they work at building a successful union.

Apparently Diane and John found happy commitment in coming to know each other, for the book's cover notes that they have been married for forty-two years and were able to work together to produce this book. The result is a common-sense approach that just about any couple can find useful - even those happily married. Their dialogues are interesting interplays of relationships and feelings that most of us can relate to. It's waiting in the library for you!

Music Notes

boone umc handbell choirProgram of Note: The Nexsen Handbell Ringers from Boone (NC) United Methodist Church will present a program in our sanctuary on Thursday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. We are pleased to be able to host this group as they begin their summer tour. They have traveled extensively throughout the United States, ringing solo concerts, participating in regional festivals, and leading handbell workshops. The concert is free. Bring your friends and family!

Music Participants for June 5: Sanctuary Choir. The Sanctuary Choir will sing through the month of June, then various soloists will sing through the end of July. The choir will resume in August.

Sunday's Music: Hymn-text writer Reginald Heber's brief life (1783-1826) was notable for his final three years, spent as a bishop of the Church of England serving in India. His hymns were written prior to that service but on the whole were not published until after his death. "Bread of the World," the sanctuary choir anthem, is a short, two- stanza hymn that simply and elegantly reminds us that through Christ's sacrifice, "our sins are dead." The musical setting is by Hal Hopson, whose contribution to church music is well known by our congregation, as he spent two weeks in residence here in 2007.

The choir introit, "Hallelujah, We Sing Your Praises," is another of the test hymns. It is an anonymous song that grew out of the South African freedom movement of the 1970s and '80s. In a time and place where hunger and injustice were common, it speaks with joy of the banquet to come, when all will gather around the table of Christ the Lord.

Thanks: Many thanks to Joel Newton and Shannan Miller for taking on music leadership roles in the 8:30 service for the month of May while Fred Foy Strang taught King College's May term in Italy. ~ Vicki & Steve Fey
