Final Arts Series Program
Catch a Rising Star This Sunday |
| | Pianist Zachary Hughes |
You won't want to miss the final program in our 2010-2011 Arts Series! Zachary Hughes is a brilliant young local pianist who is headed to Juilliard after being accepted this spring by three of the country's most prestigious schools of music. We dare to claim a share in his future fame because he lived in Bristol, where he was a student of Ann Holler, for several years before moving with his family to Travelers Rest, SC.
Steve Fey describes Zachary's talent as God-given: "He has a remarkable gift that communicates with the audience in a real special way. He makes something that's horrendously difficult to achieve sound natural and simple. It isn't just his technique, either-he understands the music intuitively. In a couple of years we're going to say, 'Wow! He played at our church!'" Zachary has received prizes from numerous regional and national music competitions, including first place in his division in both the 2006 and 2010 Bristol Music Club Scholarship auditions. He also received the 2010 Paramount Chamber Players award, given by the judges of the Music Club's scholarship auditions, for his performance with Players violinist George Figueroa in April. His current piano studies are with Dr. Chih-long Hu of ETSU. His most recent accomplishment was winning Division I of this year's Bristol Music Club scholarship auditions last Saturday. He will perform this Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m., in the Sanctuary. Suggested ticket donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students age 6 through college. |
Special Session Meeting Sunday for New Members |
This Sunday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m., between the worship services, the Session will meet new members in the Chapel.

Letter Carriers Food Drive This Saturday
Help Postal Workers Stamp Out Hunger |
Look for a brown paper grocery bag in your mailbox this week and help our local postal workers stamp out hunger in Bristol. Put nonperishable food in the bag, leave it by your mailbox, and your letter carrier will pick it up this Saturday, May 14. All Bristol donations will stay in Bristol to be distributed by the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry, the Salvation Army, and the Haven of Rest.
Our own Jim White says postal workers are hoping to collect more food this year than in the past two years, when donations to most food pantries have been insufficient for the need. Please be generous! |

Campfire Chats with God |
Come join us during Sunday School as we explore what God says about the importance of prayer. Using Bible stories, games, crafts, songs, and dramas, all centered around a campfire theme, we will learn why, when, and how the Bible teaches us to pray.
The Children's Ministry is looking for willing servants who would prayerfully consider teaching our children during the Sunday School hour. We are asking for a commitment of at least one month. Teaching materials and craft items will be provided.
Please take a moment to look over our summertime needs and decide whether you would like to be a part of our Campfire Chats with God. We hope you will!
Sunday School: June, July, August
Because classes are smaller in summer, some classes are combined.

· Second through Fifth Grade
· Helpers for younger class (can be a one-time or more commitment)
For questions or to reserve your spot, please contact Cathy Newton at the church office or by e-mail at cnewton@fpcbristol.org. |

Music Participants for May 15: Sanctuary Choir; Sanctuary Choir Women's Ensemble; Pat Flannagan, cantor; Maggie Dozier, oboe. The Feys first met oboist Maggie Dozier at a Montreat Worship and Music Conference when Vicki accompanied Maggie in the talent show. Maggie lives in Maryland with her parents and sister. She has just completed her freshman year at Virginia Tech, studying industrial engineering and Spanish, with a minor in music. She has been playing oboe for 10 years and plays in the VT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, and New River Valley Orchestra. We are delighted that Maggie is coming to Bristol to play for us in worship before heading home for the summer!
Choir Awards: The annual children's and youth choir awards dinner was held last Wednesday night. The following children received perfect attendance awards: Sally Buck, Abigail Davis, Katie Davis, Isabel Gross, Zora Gross, Daniel Osborne, Ginny Osborne, Angelica Poteat, Rosa Poteat, and Madison Ratliff. We said goodbye to graduating senior Abby Welch, and we welcomed rising sixth-graders Abigail Davis and Katie Davis into the youth choir and youth bells.

Sunday's Music: St. James Music Press is a church music publishing house that has developed a unique and timely practice. Rather than selling printed copies for a flat fee, they offer downloadable anthems that churches may reproduce in any quantity they desire. In addition, to aid in musical selection they have mp3 files of real church choirs performing the works. Our choir has been asked to record eight of the anthems that will appear in the 2011 release, and over the next few weeks we will use several of these in our morning worship as we prepare for the recording session on June 1. This week, the entire choir will sing "Quietly, Beneath the Dark Earth," an anthem whose text reminds us that, just as there is a plan for a plant to grow from a simple seed, God has a plan for our growth and witness. In addition to this anthem, the women of the choir will sing a setting of "Amazing Grace" in a unique arrangement accompanied by a solo oboe.
Test Hymn: This week we sing "Go to the World!," another hymn under consideration for the new Presbyterian Hymnal. We have used the first stanza of this sending hymn as a benediction response; it is set to the familiar tune Sine Nomine, which is more commonly associated with "For All the Saints." Written in 1985 by Sylvia Dunstan (1955-1993) for a college convocation, it was clearly inspired by the great commission. In Dunstan's brief career, she created a number of fine texts that have been gaining wide acceptance throughout the church.
Program of Note: To close out our program year, the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists is hosting a hymn festival at First Baptist Church of Bristol, VA, on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The dean of the chapter, Michael Frazier, has this to say about this event: "Four of the region's finest organists will lead the congregation in favorite hymns, old and new, spotlighting sections of the Nicene Creed. When it comes to congregational singing, it's always 'the more, the merrier,' so come early, and get a seat down front. Then prepare for a glorious evening as we lift our voices in song." ~ Vicki & Steve Fey |
