Ethiopian Mission Update
Spreading the Light of Jesus!
|
A month ago we received a letter announcing that First Presbyterian Church of Bristol had committed to a goal of $8,000 in financial support for Berhane Yesus (Light of Jesus) Elementary School in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. That goal was ambitions, but quite necessary to the survival of the school.
I praise God that he has moved through this campaign to exceed our goal! To date, in this short time, our congregation has given $9,145 to BYES!
Our support completes the school's operating budget for the 2011-2012 term, educating the 604 children who attend and securing a valuable asset in Christ's mission in Ethiopia. First Presbyterian Church of Bristol has played a significant role in this ongoing effort since 2005.
Once again, I am both humbled by your commitment to God's work in Ethiopia and thankful for your willingness to partner with BYES in sharing the Light of Jesus! ~ Peggy Hill

New Schedule for Church Office
|
Starting this week, our church office will be operating on a new schedule. Office hours Mondays through Thursdays continue the current pattern, 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. Fridays are different, with the office open 9:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. and closed in the afternoon.
We are making this change after much study to maximize the productivity of our office staff while preserving as much as possible the convenience of a live, personal response to those who contact the church by phone or in person.
As always, the pastors seek to be available in any crisis or important need. If a situation arises that needs pastoral attention, you may contact Gordon or Dave at the church during office hours; if they are unavailable, you can leave a confidential voice message for either one. If an emergency occurs outside of office hours that requires immediate attention, please call Gordon at home, 423-878-9523.

Praise to God and Thanks for Your Prayers
|
The note below comes to us from Sam and Selma Jennings, whose grandson Zachary has recently emerged from some health challenges at his birth. Zachary has been in our church's prayers through the weekly Prayer Concerns list and the ministry of our Prayer Group.
We are profoundly grateful for God's mercy in keeping our new grandson in good health. Not only was little Zachary brought back to life, but he also is in full possession of his abilities, as far as it's possible to determine. We know that many of you labored daily in prayer for him and his parents and us, and God has honored your faithfulness. May God be honored through Zach's restoration, and we praise him from whom all mercy and grace flow. ~ Sam and Selma Jennings

Financial Peace University Begins May 11
|
Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University is a 13-week, life-changing program that empowers and teaches you how to make the right money decisions to achieve your financial goals and God's plan for your life. Practical lessons cover eliminating debt, building wealth, giving like never before, and more! Through DVD and small group discussions, Financial Peace University covers the basics of Biblically based financial decision-making: cash flow management, understanding and eliminating personal debt, wise investing, how to be a generous giver, and more.
Our programs will begin Wednesday, May 11, at 5:30 p.m., and continue through the summer. Your financial commitment for materials and a lifetime membership in Financial Peace University will be $80. (Scholarships are available; please contact Dave Welch.) Membership benefits include admission to any class anywhere, anytime, and as often as you like, as well as your own workbook and handout materials.
Here's something to think about if you are interested in joining us. The average family that completes the class pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 during the 13-week period. That's an $8,000 turnaround! Financial stress is reduced in the home as couples learn how to communicate about money and work together toward family goals. These are just some of the potential benefits.
If you are interested in committing to this program for 13 Wednesday evenings, please contact Dave Welch (dwelch@fpcbristol.org) or Brian Miller, as class size is limited.

Kid Connection News
Easter Party a Very Special Occasion
|
Our Easter celebration April 16 was exciting in so many ways! The 20 children who attended enjoyed delicious, decorated cupcakes baked by Lorri Looney and an indoor Easter egg hunt. Our able helpers included five of our church youth--Christian Guldseth, Alison Looney, Blake Looney, Maleah Newton, and Annie Osborne--and several parents and Sunday School teachers.
Lilly Osborne and Ali Guldseth led the children through a very moving account of the Resurrection story, using different items to represent Jesus's last days on earth. The children were excited to participate in the story and in an invitation to take a moment to pray for those they love. It was a very special time for everyone who attended. ~ Cathy Newton

Campfire Chats with God
Children's Ministry's Summertime Sunday School
|
Along with summer come great opportunities for getting to know our children during the Sunday School hour. Come join us as we explore what God says about the importance of prayer. Using Bible stories, games, crafts, songs, and dramas, all centered around a campfire theme, we will learn why, when, and how the Bible teaches us to pray.
We cannot, however, do this without willing servants like you. With a commitment of only four hours (plus a little prep time) in a single month, you can help bring this curriculum to life. The Children's Ministry will provide all teaching and craft materials.
Please take a moment to look over our summertime needs and decide whether you would like to be a part of our Campfire Chats with God. We hope you will!
Sunday School: June, July, August
(Because classes are smaller in summer, some classes will be combined.)
· Preschool & Kindergarten
· First & Second Grade
· Third, Fourth & Fifth Grade
Kids' Kirk, First Service: June, July, August
Kids' Kirk is another opportunity to serve with a little more flexibility. We are looking for one more person to join a team of four on a rotating schedule. With this schedule, you will be teaching once a month and have the flexibility to choose which Sunday works best for you!
For questions or to reserve your spot, please contact Cathy Newton at the church office or by e-mail at cnewton@fpcbristol.org.
