Ethiopian Mission Update: The Light of Jesus |

Our friends at Berhane Yesus Elementary School send greetings and are excited to be in partnership with us in reaching out in the name of Jesus to the children in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia.
Berhane Yesus means "the light of Jesus." BYES was established by Presbyterian missionaries in 1922 as the first school in the remote western area of Ethiopia. With its enduring, strong academic reputation, it is a role model for government schools in that part of the country. BYES serves the poor and rural children of subsistence farmers, migrant workers, and displaced groups of people. Today, a faculty of 14 teaches 604 students.
At BYES, the light of Jesus shines on each of the children. Amanuel Tesfaye, the school's director, writes: "We have devotion every morning where the Gospel is read and many children accept Christ as their own Lord and savior. So God is doing miracle through our school."
We have embarked on a campaign to raise $8,000 for this school. In doing so, we not only educate children but also secure a valuable asset in Christ's mission in Ethiopia. Our goal, spread over 210 school days, works out to only $38 for a day of school.
First Presbyterian Church of Bristol is a part of this ongoing miracle because of God's grace and all of our prayers, friendship, and financial support since 2005. Thanks for responding generously to the needs of our younger sisters and brothers in Ethiopia. - Peggy Hill |
Wednesday: Last Blood Drive until Fall |
Save a life by giving blood! We need 20 volunteers for the last blood drive that will be held at our church until fall. The mobile unit of Marsh Blood Services will be in FPC's front parking lot from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., next Wednesday, April 6.
You're never too old to give blood, and donors may be as young as 17, if they have parental consent. Call the church office at 423-764-7176 to schedule an appointment or to ask for more information. |
Volunteers Needed to Mow the Church Lawn |
Mowing season is here! We need good stewards to help us meet our obligation to maintain the church campus in a state that will bring glory to God.
The yard will need mowing 25 times between the end of April and the middle of October. The more teams of two we can field, the fewer times each team will need to mow. We need regular mowers and a few substitutes who can step in occasionally. If both mowers on a team are working, it usually takes no more than two and a half or three hours to cut the yard.
Will you please prayerfully consider making a commitment to serve your church in this way? (Note: We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, but we cannot allow anyone under the age of 18 to use the mowers.) If you can help by mowing the yard occasionally, please call Randy Cook, 423-956-1541, or the church office, 423-764-7176. |
Sharing Christ Service Opportunity April 16 |
On Saturday, April 16, we will have another volunteer opportunity with Sharing Christ Mission. Volunteers can bring food they have prepared at home (recipes provided) or help serve dinner and clean up afterwards. We will gather at the mission at 4:45 p.m. and finish around 7:00 p.m.
Sharing Christ Mission is located on the corner of Sixth and State streets in Bristol, TN. This ministry provides a hot, nutritious, free meal each Saturday evening to anyone in need and adds the opportunity for worship on Sunday mornings.
For more information, please contact Tammy Connolly by email at lconn4691@btes.tv or call her at 423-968-3831 (home) or 276-628-7213 (work). |

Easter Celebration April 16 |
All the children of the church are invited to an Easter Celebration on Saturday, April 16, from 10:30 a.m. until noon. We will gather in Creation Station in the children's building to hear the Easter story, make Resurrection eggs, and decorate cupcakes. Bring your friends!
We also warmly welcome teens and adults who would like to help with these activities. Call Cathy Newton at the church office, 423-764-7176, to volunteer!
Thank You, Parents and Teachers!
Thank you to all the parents who came out for our Parent-Teacher get-together last week. We enjoyed an evening of good fellowship, good food, and good discussion. We appreciated the feedback and the opportunity for us all to get to know each other better.
We had two winners in the evening's contests. Ken Smith won the Guess How Many jar and took home 863 mints. Dawn Eubanks won the Parents Night Out drawing. Congratulations! |
April's Snack: Skinny Pretzel Sticks |
We are collecting bags of thin pretzel sticks for the children at Fairmount Elementary School so that none of them will be left out at snack time. All brands will be cheerfully accepted.
The Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee is making sure that students whose parents cannot afford to buy them afternoon snacks don't go hungry at snack time. Our own Kay Ward, the community outreach liaison at Fairmount, has learned that each classroom has at least two such children.. Two times 23 equals 46 snack portions every day, 230 snacks per week, and 920 snacks each month.
The committee is asking us to bring bags of skinny pretzel sticks to the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway anytime before the end of April. The committee will take the pretzels to the school, and the teachers will divide them into snack portions as needed.
Your loving contribution will give dignity to children from low-income families by allowing them to enjoy snacks with their classmates, and tide them over until the end of the school day. Say a prayer of blessing as you send them on their way! |

Music Participants: April 3: Sanctuary Choir; Alan Hunter, organist; Amy Oblinger, director
Sunday's Music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "I Am the Bread of Life," is a setting of John 6:35 by John Wilbye (1574-1683). Wilbye is known as a composer almost exclusively of madrigals, unaccompanied part-songs that gave close attention to expressing the meaning of their secular texts. The anthem, too, sensitively sets the words, "Jesus said, 'I am the bread of life: and those who come will not hunger, and all those who believe in me will never thirst.'" Although it comes from many centuries ago, it still speaks clearly today: through Christ's life, death, and resurrection we are fulfilled.
Arts Series: Don't forget the next program in our Arts Series! Sunday, April 10, at 3:00 p.m., we will feature concert saxophonist Ashu. Ashu, age 26, graduated from Northwestern University and has won major international and national competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists. He made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall in New York and, at age 16, made his concert debut at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. His repertoire ranges from original soprano and alto saxophone works by Debussy, Ibert, and Villa-Lobos to his own arrangements of Morricone, Rachmaninoff, and Piazzolla. Ashu has shown that the concert saxophone can reach beyond stylistic categorization to a wide diversity of listeners. Suggested ticket donation is $10 adults/$5 students age 6 through college.
Programs of Note: Other musical happenings in the area that include some of our church folks include Theatre Bristol's April 1 and 2 production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Alison Looney and Maleah Newton in the cast; King College's Dogwood weekend production (April 14-16) of the musical Pippin with stage direction by Liz Dollar and musical direction by Amy Oblinger; and the Paramount Chamber Players' gala concert here at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 16, with Vicki Fey playing the Dvořák Bagatelles for harmonium (organ) and string trio. - Steve & Vicki Fey |
