Next Adult Learning Program: Bristol Faith in Action

bristol faith in action logo

Next Wednesday, March 23, Tyler Franklin will present the evening adult program "More About Bristol Faith in Action." It will be an opportunity to learn from BFIA's director about its ongoing mission, our connection with it, and the larger context of ministry needs in Bristol.

The mission of the Bristol Faith in Action Interfaith Resource and Referral Center to "provide a witness of Christian unity in service and a sign of God's love in and for our community; and to recognize and serve the needy of our community as Christ invites us to do." First Presbyterian Church was integral in the founding of this ministry ten years ago and has supported it strongly ever since. Karen Vann currently represents FPC on the Board of Directors.

Among its many other services and ministries, BFIA provides emergency financial aid to eligible clients as well as job placement assistance and counseling. Join us March 23 to ask questions and learn more.

Parents, Teachers Meet Next Thursday

Parents of children in Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church are invited to a night of fellowship, food, fun, and information, Thursday, March 24, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. This is your chance to meet your child's teacher and to ask questions or voice concerns you may have about our children's ministry, curriculum, Vacation Bible School, and Our Safe Church. You can also learn more about working with the children's ministry.

Feel free to bring your children. We will treat them to pizza and a movie, and we will also provide a nursery. Sign up at the Children's Registration Table, and enter a drawing to win a night out with dinner and babysitting provided.

For more information, contact Cathy Newton at the church office, 423-764-7176.

This Month's Snack: Vanilla Wafers

vanilla wafers

We are collecting vanilla wafers so that none of the children at Fairmount Elementary School will be left out at snack time. All brands will be cheerfully accepted.

The Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee has been providing afternoon snacks for students whose parents cannot afford to purchase them. Kay Ward, the community outreach liaison at Fairmount, has discovered that there are at least two children in each of 23 classrooms whose parents cannot give them snacks. That adds up to a need for 46 snack portions every day, a total of 230 snacks per week, or 920 snacks each month.

The committee is asking us to bring boxes of vanilla wafers to the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway anytime before the end of March. The committee will take them to the school, and the teachers will divide them into snack portions as needed.

Your loving contribution will give dignity to children from low-income families by allowing them to enjoy snacks with their classmates, and tide them over until the end of the school day. Say a prayer of blessing as you send them on their way!

Music Notes

Music Participants: March 20, Sanctuary Choir.

Rehearsal Reminders: A reminder to parents of Cherub Choir members and youth choir members: there will be NO REHEARSALS on March 27 and April 3, the Sundays either side of the Bristol, TN, City Schools' spring break, when the Feys will be away.

Sunday's Music: The Sanctuary choir anthem, "The Greatest of These," is Christopher Wordsworth's setting of a hymn text based on I Corinthians 13. Wordsworth, a nineteenth-century bishop in the Church of England, was the nephew of the noted poet William Wordsworth, with whom he maintained a long and close relationship. As well as a hymn writer, Wordsworth was a noted Bible scholar, publishing commentaries on both the Old and New Testaments. The musical setting is by the well-known church musician and composer Jane Marshall, who served for a number of years on the faculty of the sacred music program of the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, of which she was a graduate.

Arts Series: The next program in our 2010-2011 Arts Series will take place Sunday, April 10, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary and will feature concert saxophonist Ashu. More details later, but mark your calendars now! - Steve & Vicki Fey
