Ash Wednesday Service March 9
ash wed cross

Please join us this Wednesday, March 9, at 6:20 p.m. in the Sanctuary for our Ash Wednesday worship service. This service will follow our weekly fellowship meal (5:30 p.m.); all ages are invited to participate.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day season of preparation for the celebration of Easter. At one time Lent served primarily as the time of instruction during which converts prepared for baptism on Easter Sunday. Over time it has developed into a period of penitence and renewal for all Christians. The Ash Wednesday worship service allows us to ponder our mortality and need for salvation, providing an option for worshippers to receive on their foreheads the sign of the cross. This sign proclaims both our need for Christ and our identity in Christ, a beautiful truth to claim as we prepare our hearts for Easter.

Praying God's blessing upon us all as we walk the path with Jesus. - Gordon Turnbull

Presbyterian Women Meet Tuesday

PCUSA seal smallThe Presbyterian Women will meet Tuesday, March 8, at 11:00 a.m. Gordon Turnbull's Bible lesson will begin at 11:30, and lunch will follow.

We invite everyone in the congregation to join us in saving used commemorative stamps; these will be sold to benefit missionaries. You can bring your stamps to the church office anytime. Such a simple thing can make a difference in spreading Christ's love.

Catawba Singers to Give Concert at FPC

catawba singers

The Catawba Singers, Catawba College's highly regarded concert choir and veterans of Carnegie Hall, will give a concert in our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.

The choir is the premier choral ensemble of Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, and its touring concert choir. The 62-voice ensemble sings selections from the world's greatest choral repertoire, as well as indigenous music, musical theatre, gospel songs, spirituals, and popular songs.

The Catawba Singers are under the direction of Paul E. Oakley, the artist-in-residence in choral music and an associate professor of music at Catawba College, where he is also the college organist.  He is also the music director and principal conductor of the Ethos Consortium, a professional chamber orchestra and chorus in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the organist for Salisbury's historic First Presbyterian Church.  He is also the editor of a choral music series for Colla Voce Music.

In 2008-2009, the Catawba Singers sang a solo performance in New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall, where they also joined forces with the New York Chamber Orchestra and Catawba's world-class vocal faculty soloists for a performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah, under Maestro Oakley's baton.  In 2009-2010 the Catawba Singers performed at the Washington National Cathedral, and sang concerts at the North Carolina ACDA Convention and the North Carolina Music Educators Convention.

Following the college's commencement ceremonies in May, the choir plans to participate in a Catawba College trip to France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  This tour will include concerts in the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Church of St. Etienne-du-Mont in Paris; Jesuit Church in Lucerne; St. Michael's Collegiate Church in Munich; and the Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria.

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." -Matthew 25: 35-36

First Presbyterian Church is involved in many ministries, and one is dedicated to responding to the needs of our members, friends, and regular visitors. The Care Shepherd Ministry was begun more than five years ago as a part of the Deacons' committee for Congregational Care.

Care Shepherds are members of our congregation, like you, who volunteer to keep watch over the needs of the congregation for one month. Care Shepherds show Christian love to members of our church family by arranging meals, visiting, writing notes and cards, making phone calls, or providing other services.

Our ministers and the church office are a valuable part of the team. They help keep us informed of those in need. Each Care Shepherd is given a manual with explicit instructions about what action to take in any given situation. A volunteer's workload varies from month to month.

Love, warmth, comfort, and caring are two-way streets: Care Shepherds are blessed by serving our congregation. Please consider serving as a Care Shepherd this year. You may sign up this month during worship or by contacting the church office during the week. If you have questions, call Gordon Turnbull (423.764.7176) or contact:

Children's Ministry Offers Volunteer Opportunities

FPC's children's ministry is looking for a few people who would enjoy spending time with our children on Sunday mornings. The following volunteer opportunities are now available:

·        One-on-one shepherding is a great opportunity to minister to our children with special needs and to their parents.

·        Substitute teachers get to know our wonderful children while giving our regular teachers a break when they are ill or on vacation.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Cathy Newton at the church office.

Music Notes

Music Participants: March 6: Sanctuary Choir, Jubilate Youth Choir, Cherub Choir. Thanks to Linsi Phelps for serving as liturgist February 27.

Choir Music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem for Sunday, March 6, "Now to Praise the Name of Jesus,"is a communion anthem with words and music by Michael Bedford. A native of Sherman, TX, he was a student of Mary Landrum's when she was on the faculty of Austin College in that town. Bedford has served as organist and choir director of St. John's Episcopal Church of Tulsa, OK, for a number of years. The three stanzas of Sunday's anthem echo many biblical passages. The first calls out to Jesus to make us his; the second reminds us that we are sanctified through Christ's gift of love; the third is an expression of our praise and a call to serve. The youth choir anthem echoes the theme of serving with the refrain "Lord, here am I, send me."

Housing: We still need just a few homes for members of the Catawba College Singers. If you can house two students for one night (March 10) and feed them breakfast, let us know as soon as possible. - Steve & Vicki Fey
