Celebrating the Service of Scouts and Officers

PCUSA seal smallThis Sunday, February 13, our worship will celebrate two vital aspects of our ministry: our long-standing support of Scouting and the leadership of our church officers.

Each year, we observe Scout Sunday as part of local activities in recognition of National Boy Scout Week. In February 1922, First Presbyterian Church organized and chartered BSA Troop 3, which remains the oldest active troop in the Sequoyah Council. In addition, First Presbyterian Church sponsors Cub Scout Pack 3 and Venture Crew 3. Through these units, we gladly claim our proud connection with this ministry of outreach, character formation, and leadership development.

At both worship services, we will conduct a service of ordination and installation of our newly elected officers. Our elders and deacons have completed a course of officer training and have begun their ministries on Session and Diaconate. The service of ordination sets apart those who enter into a new office of ministry; the officers' installation marks the beginning of their three-year term of service on the Session of Elders or the Board of Deacons.

Another Chance to Participate in Souper Bowl

souper bowl bannerDuring worship on February 6, we took up a special collection, the Souper Bowl Hunger Relief Offering. You generously donated $789.49, which will go directly to the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. Thank you!

If you did not have the opportunity to join in this great effort, it is not too late to contribute. Checks may be made payable to First Presbyterian Church (memo: Souper Bowl Offering).

Please pray for the mission of the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry and all who seek to address hunger in our community.

Join Our Care Shepherds Congregational Ministry

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." -Matthew 25: 35-36

First Presbyterian Church is involved in many ministries, and one is dedicated to responding to the needs of our members, friends, and regular visitors. The Care Shepherd Ministry was begun more than five years ago as a part of the Deacons' committee for Congregational Care.

Care Shepherds are members of our congregation, like you, who volunteer to keep watch over the needs of the congregation for one month. Care Shepherds show Christian love to members of our church family by arranging meals, visiting, writing notes and cards, making phone calls, or providing other services.

Our ministers and the church office are a valuable part of the team. They help keep us informed of those in need. Each Care Shepherd is given a manual with explicit instructions about what action to take in any given situation. A volunteer's workload varies from month to month.

Love, warmth, comfort, and caring are two-way streets: Care Shepherds are blessed by serving our congregation. Please consider serving as a Care Shepherd this year. You may sign up this month during worship or by contacting the church office during the week. If you have questions, call Gordon Turnbull (423.764.7176) or contact:

Mug Exchange Returns to Women's Retreat

women's retreat logoFPC's annual women's retreat is scheduled for March 11-13 at Blowing Rock Conference Center. The theme will be "Blessed Be My Rock: Stories of God's Saving Love."

We will share stories of God's faithfulness and take time for both small-group discussion and individual contemplation. And in a tradition returning by popular demand, we will also exchange coffee or tea mugs again this year, so be in search of one to bring with you. We trade mugs as a way of identifying a prayer partner for the year. The idea is that each time you use your partner's mug, you will be reminded to pray for her.

Plan to join us for a weekend of sharing, Bible study, prayer, and fellowship in a beautiful setting!

Exploration of History of King James Bible Continues on Wednesday Evenings

page of antique bible

Dr. Martin Dotterweich, associate professor of history at King College, will continue to lead us through the story behind the King James Version of the Bible during the Wednesday evening program. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the King James, or Authorized, Version. We are devoting four weeks to following the story of how that version came to be, a drama full of exotic settings and compelling characters.

We will also consider how the King James Version came to occupy its position as the dominant version for so long, and how it has shaped language and literature in its 400 years.

Music Notes

Music Participants: February 13, Sanctuary Choir.

Choir Anthem: The Sanctuary Choir anthem on February 13, Christ is Made the Sure Foundation, is a new musical setting of a classic text. Originally a seventh-century Latin hymn, it was translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851. This was a period when scholars were rescuing ancient texts as well as exploring texts from traditions outside the English-speaking world. Neale's translations of ancient Latin and Greek hymns set the standard for faithfulness to the original while creating beautiful and memorable hymns. Among his other beloved texts are O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Good Christian Friends, Rejoice; All Glory, Laud, and Honor; and Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain. The medieval text was drawn from passages in 1 Peter, Revelation, and Ephesians and is believed to have been written for the dedication of a church. It is a powerful call for us to be more than just a building or community as we become a church. The musical setting is by Gilbert Martin, who studied at Westminster Choir College, has worked for many years as a freelance composer of sacred music, and is a resident of Dayton, OH.

Ordination Hymn: Pat and Beth Flannagan commissioned this Sunday's postsermon hymn, From Our Mothers' Wombs You Know Us, for the ordination of Meg Flannagan at our church in 2006. Mary Louise Bringle, one of the most noted hymn writers working today, wrote the text, and our own Ann Holler composed the music. It reminds us, not only those ordained but all baptized, that we have each been called to service in Christ's church. The choir has sung this hymn for baptisms, and it is most appropriate for a service at which we ordain and install new church officers for service to Christ's church.

Test Hymn: The test hymn we will sing this week, Shall We Gather at the River, is hardly a new hymn, although it has never appeared in a Presbyterian hymnal. Both words and music were written in 1864 by Robert Lowry, who was a 38-year-old Baptist pastor serving a congregation in Brooklyn, NY, at the time. According to one source quoting Lowry: "It was a time when an epidemic was sweeping through the city, and draping many persons and dwellings in mourning. All around friends and acquaintances were passing away to the spirit land in large numbers. The question began to arise in the heart, with unusual emphasis, 'Shall we meet again? We are parting at the river of death, shall we meet at the river of life?' ... The words and music of the hymn began to flow out, as if by inspiration." Lowry wrote a number of popular hymns, but this has been his most widely sung creation, nearly taking on the nature of a folk song. Clearly drawing on the imagery of the opening verses of Revelation 22, it is a reassuring confirmation of the joys of eternal life. - Vicki & Steve Fey
