Medical study:Reiki helps Heart Attack Patients This was such a great story, I am reprinting the article, includes link to the actual medical report.
(I-Newswire) New York City/New Haven, October 13, 2010 - In this study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Reiki treatment significantly reduced the emotional stress associated with a heart attack, thereby reducing the risk of a second attack. It is well documented that emotional stress negatively affects autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, and therefore heart disease (ANS controls heart rate).
Additionally, the Reiki treatments improved heart rate variability (HRV), a physiologic measure that indicates if the patient's body is recovering from the stress response. Usually this increase is achieved through drug intervention (beta blockers) which work slowly and are not well tolerated by some patients. The benefit of the Reiki treatments was comparable to using beta blockers.
This important study shows that Reiki treatment can be offered in an acute-care setting (patients received Reiki treatment within three days after suffering heart). The 20-minute treatments offered to patients by Reiki-trained staff nurses improved the patients subjective mood on all indicators. Patients who feel better have better medical outcomes and are better partners to their health care providers.

Does a Newly Found Hidden Sensory System Explain Reiki Sensations?
One of the mysteries of Reiki is about the sensations people feel in their hands... We feel real sensations, sometimes subtle, sometimes vivid of heat, cold, tingling and pressure, that don't correspond to the room temperature or conditions. These nuances correspond to our perception of things going on in our own body or the body of those we are working about. But how do these sensations occur? I recently read an article discussing a hidden sensory system in the skin that tantalizingly sounds like a possible explanation. I researched it back to the following press release. There focus was NOT on holistic healing explanations, but it certainly seems worthy of study.
December 15, 2009 - (Albany, N.Y., USA) The human sensory experience is far more complex and nuanced than previously thought, according to a groundbreaking new study published in the December 15 issue of the journal Pain (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19836135 ). In the article, researchers at Albany Medical College, the University of Liverpool and Cambridge University report that the human body has an entirely unique and separate sensory system aside from the nerves that give most of us the ability to touch and feel. Surprisingly, this sensory network is located throughout our blood vessels and sweat glands, and is for most people, largely imperceptible. Read full article

Want more background than the above?
I have a great section on my website that talks about Reiki and research. It includes overviews and links for the center for Reiki research, ReikiMedResearch.org, and Pamela Miles Reiki papers list.
