The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

Incident Reporting System

Portal

The Hazmat Fusion Center now has over 900 users with Members' Only access and 59 hazmat teams registered to use the Incident Reporting System. We also have several states interested in using the Incident Reporting System as their state-wide hazmat reporting system! Are you a member of the portal and/or the Incident Reporting System? If not, join now.

New content is added to the Public and Members' Only sites on at least a weekly basis. We are currently working on implementing a regularly updated "News" section on the portal. Also coming soon, a "Hazmat History" section of important historical hazmat incidents that every responder should know about.

If you have information that you think would be valuable to hazmat responders nationwide, please send it to us, and we will consider posting it on the website.

RIST

RIST Logo

This year RISTs will offer alternate survey types in an effort to gather even more lessons learned and smart practices from across the country to share with hazmat responders.

Type I - Full: This survey includes a RIST visit to the incident locale and results in a training package available for download from the Fusion Center website.

Type II - Reconnaissance
: This survey includes a RIST visit to the incident locale and results in a summary and full report which will be shared with other hazmat responders.

Type III - Interface: This survey takes a one-on-one follow up approach. Once you've submitted your report into the Fusion Center's reporting system and requested follow up from RIST, a RIST member will contact you directly. At minimum, a summary will be produced and made available on the website. For more detailed information, see the RIST survey types
.

Check out our latest summaries available on the Public website: Gasoline Transportation (Central 0902) and Anhydrous Hydrogen Chloride Fixed (Central 0903). Become a member to access the full reports.

Coming soon: Homemade Explosives response information.

Outreach

The Hazmat Fusion Center has identified approximately 1,100 hazmat teams throughout the United States (based on each state's definition of a hazmat team). An initial listing of teams has been developed and will be updated on a regular basis.

Hazmat Fusion Center staff presented at the North Dakota Hazardous Materials Conference in Bismarck during December 2010. At the end of February, training on the Incident Reporting System will be conducted at the Wisconsin Association of Hazardous Materials Responders Conference.

Mark your calendars for the International Hazardous Materials Response Teams Conference on May 18-21 in Baltimore, MD. Attend the Hazmat Fusion Center's sessions on 5/20/11 from 7:30 to 9:00 am and 5/21/11 from 8:00 to 9:20 am and visit us at our exhibiting booth.
