The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

After three years of research and development, the National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center will celebrate the national rollout of its full web portal! The nationwide release, scheduled for October 15, 2010 at the opening session of the HOTZONE Conference in Houston, Texas, will give the hazmat community access to the entire portal, including the Members Only area and the Incident Reporting System. If your schedule allows, please join us, representatives from the U.S. DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, leaders from the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the HOTZONE Planning Committee, and responders from not only Region VI, but around the nation, as the Fusion Center celebrates reaching this milestone.
Why register for Members Only access? It allows qualified individuals an opportunity to participate in the full suite of Fusion Center products including complete RIST reports (instead of executive summaries), discussion boards, the hazmat forum, and interaction with hazmat responders across North America. Please fill out an individual registration form if you are interested in access to the Members Only area.
In addition, the Hazmat Fusion Center has developed an Incident Reporting System that hazmat teams can use to enter their incidents, perform their own analysis and produce reports. Not only is the system a useful tool helping local jurisdictions to manage and analyze their own incident data, but the Incident Reporting System also helps the Hazmat Fusion Center create a picture of hazardous materials response nationally. Eventually, hazmat teams will be able to compare their incidents with what is happening in their state and region. By collecting this information, the Hazmat Fusion Center will be able to look for trends and produce valuable alerts for hazmat responders. Please help the Hazmat Fusion Center by registering to use the Incident Reporting System. |

The Fusion Center team was in Chicago for the Fire-Rescue International Conference on August 26-28. In addition to having a booth and distributing training materials and other informational items, the Fusion Center led two educational sessions. The first featured an overview of the Fusion Center and web portal changes and a review of the newly developed Hydrochloric Acid Training Package. RIST member Marty Greene from Massachusetts led the training package review. The second session overviewed alternative fuels including ethanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen, all programs that the Fusion Center has been involved in developing. Thanks to Marty Greene, Jim Rist, and A.K. Rosenhan for leading the segments.
