The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

Incident Reporting System

Greetings!

The National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center (Hazmat Fusion Center) has rapidly moved into its third year of activities while constantly working to live up to its motto of "Responders helping Responders." Several activities are worth noting.

Outreach Efforts

If you were in Baltimore, Salt Lake City, Little Rock, Kansas City, or Charlotte during February to early March, you might have run into your Hazmat Fusion Center team. A series of regional meetings was conducted in each of the five U.S. DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regions. There was a two-fold purpose for the meetings with the first being to continue gathering information about the identification and location of the nation's hazmat response teams and second, to find out what electronic learning systems are being utilized as the Hazmat Fusion Center looks at the Electronic Learning Community within the fire and emergency services. The second area is part of the Hydrogen Fuels Training and Education Research and Outreach Project which focuses on improving training delivery (with an initial emphasis on hydrogen) to volunteer and combination departments. The target audience for the meetings included hazmat leadership from each state and the fire training directors. Notes from the meetings may be viewed on the Web Portal.

Make your plans to attend the International Hazardous Materials Response Teams Conference, May 19-23, in the new location at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. For further information, please visit IAFC website.

Web Portal Update

Incident Reporting SystemAnother area where significant efforts have been made is the Web Portal. The Hazmat Incident Reporting System continues to be refined and is currently in Beta testing with seven teams from around the country accomplishing data entry. Over 100 incident reports have been submitted and there are over 200 individual users. Plans are being made for a full rollout of the Web Portal mid-year 2010. If you are interested in participating in the Beta testing process please contact Data Analyst Elena Slavinsky at eslavinsky@iafc.org or Data Program Manager Kelly Wolfe at kwolfe@iafc.org.

RIST Activities

RIST LogoThe Regional Incident Survey Team (RIST) effort continues to expand with sixteen surveys completed and more in various stages of planning, preparation, and development. Seven summaries and reports are in the final process of editing and formatting before being posted to the Hazmat Fusion Center Web Portal. If you were involved in an incident that produced a 'learnable moment' and you would like a RIST to conduct a survey, please visit the Hazmat Fusion Center web site for information at www.hazmatfc.com or contact RIST Coordinator Amber Wells at awells@iafc.org.

Your Hazmat Fusion Center staff is looking forward to seeing you. Don't forget to visit and bookmark the National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center website, www.hazmatfc.com. It is growing and changing to reflect user needs and will offer more resources for your use on a regular basis.

As the Year Three effort continues, the Hazmat Fusion Center staff invites you to participate in continuing to grow, build, use, and improve your National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center!
