The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

The first National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center Symposium was conducted by the Hazardous Materials Fusion Center on July 28, 2009 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with approximately 140 participants from across the hazardous materials community. Attendees rotated through four sessions including a demonstration of the Hazmat Fusion Center Web portal, local hazmat issues and concerns, hazmat hot topics and a Federal panel. Attendees had several positive comments after the event and reported that the Symposium gave them an opportunity to get definitive answers about the Hazmat Fusion Center and its many components. Participants also shared that the event was successful in dispelling some of the most prevalent misconceptions about the Hazmart Fusion Center and its mission. Others commented that attending the symposium was a worthwhile commitment of time and supplied a variety of new information and great networking opportunities. A post-symposium survey is being conducted to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the Philadelphia program in order to build even more productive symposia in the future. Even as the first symposium is being reviewed, the groundwork is being laid for the second National Hazmat Fusion Center Symposium which is scheduled for early November 2009 in Denver, Colorado. Changes are being made to the format that will allow for the presententation of current hazmat challenges, solutions, and networking opportunities for attendees. A complete report about the first two symposia will be available after the conclusion of the Denver symposium. Also available on the Web site is the Focus Group Report. This report is a direct refelction of the feedback offered by hundreds of participants during the development of the Hazmat Fusion Center. Keep checking the Hazmat Fusion Center Web site for www.hazmatfc.com for updates! |
Regional Incident Survey Teams (RIST)
The RIST(s) are now fully deployed into each of the five Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) region. A total of seven RIST(s) are currently conducting surveys across the country including surveys in the PHMSA Eastern, Central, and Western regions with more surveys scheduled in the Southern and Southwest regions. Because of the Hazmat Fusion Center's policy regarding the privacy of the jurisdictions involved, we cannot disclose exactly where the surveys are being conducted, but we can say that a wide variety of hazmat related incidents of interest to the emergency response community are being pursued nationawide. Please keep in touch with us on the Hazmat Fusion Center Web site to see what new informational products are being made available as a result of these ongoing RIST surveys. The Hazmat Fusion Center depends on you to provide information about hazardous materials incidents nationwide, especially when those incidents may provide lessons learned and best practices that may assist other hazmat responders across the nation. If you think you have an incident worth sharing with others and would like a RIST to conduct a survey, please do not hesitate to contact the Hazmat Fusion Center's RIST Coordinator, Amber Wells, at awells@iafc.org or utilize the general Hazmat Fusion Center email address, hazmatfusion@iafc.org. |

The Web portal of the Hazmat Fusion Center is in the beta development stage with data entry being conducted by a few jurisdictions throughout the United States. Please let us know if you are interested in participating in this early testing. While the Web portal has two areas, one for registered users and the other for public access, a variety of information is beginning to be made available on the public side including training packages such as the Biodiesel Response Considerations training package, the Responding to Ethanol Incidents training package, and the RIST developed Chlorine training package which may be downloaded at no charge. Links are being established to hazmat related topics so that the Hazmat Fusion Center will become your "one stop shop" for hazmat information. Please contact the Hazmat Fusion Center's Data Program Manager, Kelly Wolfe, at kwolfe@iafc.org or Elena Slavinsky, the Data Analyst at eslavinsky@iafc.org with questions, concerns, comments, and suggestions about other resources to include on the portal.
