The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

The second National Hazmat Fusion Center Symposium is scheduled for November 4, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. The symposium will be held at the Doubletree Hotel Denver located at 3203 Quebec Street. It is vital that prospective attendees register and make room reservations early because the block of rooms reserved for attendees disappears October 9. Currently, 49 of your colleagues have registered and are looking forward to participating in sessions that include current hazmat challenges and solutions, alternative fuels, and an interactive Federal Panel discussion. We hope to have a special presentation about catastrophic chlorine releases. Register early and help the Hazmat Fusion Center match the success of reaching 150 participants at its first symposium conducted July 28, 2009, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please contact Jennifer Dietz at jdietz@iafc.org for registration information. The Hazmat Fusion Center also recognizes the financial constraints that many jurisdictions are currently facing regarding travel. You may be able to qualify for limited reimbursement to help offset some hotel and mileage expenses. Please contact Elena Slavinsky at eslavinsky@iafc.org for details. Remember to keep checking the Hazmat Fusion Center website at www.hazmatfc.com. |
Regional Incident Survey Teams (RIST)
A variety of hazmat related incidents of interest to the emergency response community are being surveyed by RISTs nationwide. Please keep in touch with us on the Hazmat Fusion Center website to see what new informational products are being made available as a result of these ongoing RIST surveys. We welcome your suggestions as to what type or format of informational products would be most useful to you whether it is a training package such as the RIST developed chlorine program or an executive summary. Please let us know what you would like to see.
Remember, the Hazmat Fusion Center depends on you to provide information about hazardous materials incidents nationwide, especially when those incidents may provide lessons learned and smart practices that may assist other hazmat responders across the nation. If you think you have an incident worth sharing with others and would like a RIST to conduct a survey, please do not hesitate to contact the Hazmat Fusion Center's RIST Coordinator, Amber Wells, at awells@iafc.org or utilize the general Hazmat Fusion Center email address, hazmatfusion@iafc.org. |

The Web Portal of the Hazmat Fusion Center continues in the beta development stage with data entry being conducted by a few jurisdictions throughout the United States. Again, please let us know if you are interested in participating in this early testing. The home page of the Web Portal is being redesigned and enhanced to better catch your eye and encourage your use. We are always trying to improve content. Please contact the Hazmat Fusion Center's Data Program Manager, Kelly Wolfe, at kwolfe@iafc.org or Elena Slavinsky, the Data Analyst at eslavinsky@iafc.org with questions, concerns, comments, and suggestions about the Portal.
