The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

Greetings!
When you talk to members of the staff working at the Hazmat Fusion Center, you will often hear the word excited used. Now there is an elevated level of excitement because the Hazmat Fusion Center staff spent several days moving from other locations within the headquarters of the International Association of Fire Chiefs to the new, dedicated area for the National Hazardous Materials Fusion Center. There really is a "brick and mortar" location for your Hazmat Fusion Center to call home! We hope to have a formal introduction of the facility in mid-September but always welcome visitors. If you find yourself planning to spend some time in the DC/Fairfax, Virginia area, we would be glad to show you around the facility. Please remember that it is a work in progress. |

Over the past several months, Hazmat Fusion Center staff has been busy conducting outreach and providing educational information. Presentations were conducted for the Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Association in Lake Charles, Louisiana; the IAFC's International Hazardous Materials Response Teams Conference in Baltimore, Maryland; the Bureau of Explosives/Association of American Railroads Hazardous Materials Seminar in Kansas City, Missouri; and an especially warm welcome was provided by the sponsors of the Cold Zone Hazmat Conference in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Please contact Hazmat Fusion Center Program Manager Tom Wells at twells@iafc.org if you would like to schedule a session or find out about how the Hazmat Fusion Center might be able to support your educational session/seminar/conference. |

If you are attending the Fire-Rescue International Conference, August 24-28 in Chicago, Illinois, please visit the Hazmat Fusion Center booth # 1140 and consider attending our sessions. Friday, August 27: Hazardous Materials Response and Collaboration - Web portal and Lessons Learned, 7:00 am to 8:30 am (Session # WK70) and Saturday, August 28: An Introduction to Ethanol, Biodiesel, and Hydrogen Alternative Fuels Programs, 8:30 am to 12:00 pm (Session # WK127). The proposed new website design was debuted at the IAFC's Hazmat Conference. Several people took part in initial usability testing on the new layout and design and provided insightful feedback. We are busy implementing their ideas and the new website look will be rolled out within the next few months. Work continues on the Hazmat Fusion Center Incident Reporting System which is still undergoing Beta testing. If your organization is interested in helping build and improve the Hazmat Fusion Center Incident Reporting System, please contact Data Analyst Elena Slavinsky at eslavinsky@iafc.org or Data Program Manager Kelly Wolfe at kwolfe@iafc.org. The national rollout of the Web portal and incident reporting system is planned for later this year.

The Regional Incident Survey Team effort continues to move forward with additional survey reports in the final process of editing, formatting, and peer review before being posted on the portal. A highlight was the filming of the RIST Lessons Learned session at the IAFC's Hazmat Conference. This should be available for download shortly. As ever, if you would like a RIST to conduct a survey, please visit the Hazmat Fusion Center web site for information at www.hazmatfc.com or contact RIST Coordinator Amber Wells at awells@iafc.org. |
