The mission of the Hazmat Fusion Center is to enhance hazmat responder safety and improve decision-making for responses to hazmat incidents. This project is a collaborative effort of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

Incident Reporting System

Hazmat Team Networking and Hydrogen/
Electronic Learning Community Meetings

Meeting picture

The Hazmat Fusion Center will be conducting a series of five regional meetings during February to continue the process of identifying and networking the nation's hazardous materials response teams. Another important aspect of the meetings is to find out what the current status is of hydrogen fuel response training and the types of electronic learning systems being used across the country. The target audiences for these meetings are state hazmat leadership and fire training directors. We'll be sure to let you know what we discover.

The meetings are scheduled for February 9 in Baltimore, Maryland; February 11 in Charlotte, North Carolina; February 18 in Salt Lake City, Utah; February 23 in Little Rock, Arkansas and February 25 in Kansas City, Missouri. This reflects one meeting in each of the U.S. DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regions.

Regional Incident Survey Teams (RIST)

RIST LogoRIST conducted two surveys during January and have two additional surveys scheduled for February with four invitations for additional surveys. Due to privacy issues we can't tell you which jurisdictions are involved.
The staff at the Hazmat Fusion Center is anxiously awaiting the final edited versions of the RIST reports (both executive summaries and full reports) so they may be posted to the Web Portal for review by hazmat responders across the nation. Please don't hesitate to contact Amber Wells, RIST Coordinator, at awells@iafc.org or send an email to hazmatfusion@iafc.org if you have an incident that you believe might have valuable lessons learned to be shared with other responders.

Web Portal

Incident Reporting SystemThe redesign of the Hazmat Fusion Center Web Portal is underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of February. The new look should hold your attention while making it easier to navigate the site. After you see it, please let us know what you think about the redesign.

Beta testing continues and six hazmat teams are currently entering hazmat incident data into the reporting system. Plans are underway to train three more teams. There are currently 200 users with access to the secure side of the Web Portal. A broader release is planned for later in 2010 which should allow more registered users to access the secure side. For further information please contact Kelly Wolfe, Data Program Manager, at
kwolfe@iafc.org or Elena Slavinsky, Data Analyst, at eslavinsky@iafc.org.
