President's Message
|
Got religion? We have some for you
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
I have heard that one of the topics you should avoid discussing with friends is religion. If you do, you may risk heated arguments and even losing friendships. But what about journalists who cover religion? What challenges do they face and how do they come across?
According to a study by Prof. John Green, Director of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron, journalists may be out of touch with their audiences when it comes to religion. Is this true?
We invite you to attend our panel discussion on this topic this Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Brooklyn Branch, Cuyahoga County Public Library at 7 p.m. Come, listen and share your thoughts too. It's also a chance to network and meet SPJ members and other writers in the area. We hope to see you there! See details below.
Sincerely,
Cheryl D'Mello

John Green expressed surprise at some of the study findings
|
Should the media's coverage of religion get the public's blessing?
A recent study coauthored by John Green of the University of Akron found reporters tend to cover the political angle in religion stories - but readers say they're more interested in the spiritual side. Survey results also showed that not even one in five reporters see themselves as "very knowledgeable" about religion.
Should reporters focus on the spiritual? That's the starting point for a discussion that will include questions from the audience. Join us at the Brooklyn Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. as we discuss and debate media coverage of religion.
Our panelists are:
- Mark Rollenhagen, pastor and former Plain Dealer reporter and editor. Now pastor at Faith Lutheran in Lakewood.
- Shih Ying-Fa, former journalist, current abbot and founder of CloudWater Zendo, the Zen Center of Cleveland and the Nien-Fo Ch'an Order of Buddhist Monks.
- Nancy Erikson, editor of the Catholic Universe Bulletin.
For more information on the study visit http://www.wksu.org/news/story/31277
For more information about the program, call Rodney Bengston, Program Chair and First VP for SPJ Cleveland, at (440) 334-0141 or email rodbengston@scglobal.net.

Lies and Elections:
Are we in a post-truth era?
|
| |
Has reporting the truth of a sitiuation been surpassed by other priorities such as providing balance, maintaining objectivity or refusing to take sides? Should reporters "adjudicate" or simply report what was said by both sides?
Given the closeness of the fall elections, truth-telling is more topical than ever. Richard Perloff, professor at Cleveland State University's School of Communication will explore this topic in conversation with Robert Higgs, editor of PolitiFact Ohio and deputy metro editor at The Plain Dealer on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9:30 a.m. at First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 21600 Shaker Blvd., Shaker Hts. The church is on the eastbound side of Shaker Blvd., just east of Warrensville Center Road. The RTA Rapid's Belvoir stop is right in front of the church.
