President's Message
|
Journalism is alive and well!
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
Dear friends:
This is the message I bring back from the Excellence in Journalism 2012 Conference held in Ft. Lauderdale over this weekend. For the second year, the Society of Professional Journalists partnered with the Radio Television Digital News Association, or RTDNA, to offer "a cornucopia of things to do," as outgoing SPJ President John Ensslin said.
Tech gurus, social media experts, broadcast giants and award winning journalists kept hundreds of professionals, students and professors engaged. It was a mix of
boot camps, trainings, networking, auctions, receptions, voting and awards presentations.
"This is one of the most exciting and important periods in journalism history. Journalists are more in demand than ever before," said incoming SPJ President Sonny Albarado, who was sworn in on Saturday night. "Our roles have not changed; it is the tools and jobs that have changed."
At one of the super-sessions "tech evangelist" and professor Sree Sreenivasan, the first digital officer at
Columbia University, explained the importance of journalists collecting a cyber-presence and curating it.
 | | Sree Sreennivasan |
"The future of journalism is digitized and specialized and more socialized than it has ever been before. Build your network before you need it, not when you need it," Sreenivasan told conference attendees.
It was an amazing conference and it was certainly tough to ignore the sandy beaches and sunshine of Ft. Lauderdale! But it was worth it! More next week.
Sincerely,
Cheryl D'Mello

Lies and Elections:
Are we in a post-truth era?
|
| |
Has reporting the truth of a sitiuation been surpassed by other priorities such as providing balance, maintaining objectivity or refusing to take sides? Should reporters "adjudicate" or simply report what was said by both sides?
Given the closeness of the fall elections, truth-telling is more topical than ever. Richard Perloff, professor at Cleveland State University's School of Communication will explore this topic in conversation with Robert Higgs, editor of PolitiFact Ohio and deputy metro editor at The Plain Dealer on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9:30 a.m. at First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 21600 Shaker Blvd., Shaker Hts. The church is on the eastbound side of Shaker Blvd., just east of Warrensville Center Road. The RTA Rapid's Belvoir stop is right in front of the church.
Admission to the forum is free.
