President's Message

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

Dear friends:

The brilliant turquoise blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean lap gently at the palm fringed beaches of the Marriot Harbor Beach Fort Lauderdale Resort & Spa. The 2012 Excellence in Journalism Conference beckons. Have you registered? There is an impressive array of presentations along with fun events such as a guided Everglades tour.

Speakers include Sree Sreenivasan, a Columbia University digital media and education specialist, and Rick Bragg, a Pulitzer-winning New York Times reporter and best-selling author. For a complete list of professional development sessions, visit the conference website.

In the latest issue of Quill magazine which all our members receive, John Ensslin, the 2011-2012 national SPJ President and a journalist for 34 years, shares how much he has learned from journalism conferences over the years. "SPJ is such a solid investment in myself," he says, giving him access to a ton of training and tools that have enabled him to be a better reporter.

In journalism as in every field and area of life, we are called to be the best person/wife/journalist/parent we can be. And that calls for constant learning and relearning.

How can you afford to go? How can you afford not to go? It's a chance to keep abreast of the latest trends in the industry and be the best journalist and writer you can be! A couple of us from Cleveland will be at the Conference, so we do hope to see some of you there.

Lastly, apologies for my typo error in my last column. SPJ gives you the opportunity to network with 8,000 people across the country, not county (!) I am certainly looking forward to updating my writing skills at the conference!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

Can WMMS' success be repeated?

Back in 1968, WMMS was a new radio station set to dominate the airwaves. After 10 years they were breaking rock icons, setting market records, hosting legendary DJ's and winning the Rolling Stone Radio Station of the Year award time after time.

How did they do it?  Could that success be repeated now?

As part of the Press Club 125 anniversary celebrations, they joined with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum to put together a panel of pioneers from WMMS's golden era. It includes:

Billy Bass - pioneer of Alternative Radio,

Gaye Ramstrom - 25 years in sales and sales management at WMMS,

Denny Sanders - Rooted in the life of Cleveland Radio from 1971 to 2001.

Walt Tiburski - WMMS/Malrite Broadcasting Vice President and General Manager.

They'll discuss radio then and now at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum on Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. The cost is $12.50 and tickets are limited so click here to register now.
