President's Message
Planning begins for coming year's events
Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

Dear friends:

In the midst of this sizzling summer heat, our board enthusiastically met on Sunday to discuss our chapter's events. Look out for these here in Writer's Week and also on our chapter website. We invite all of you to attend these events, whether you are a member or not.

We also invite you to visit the national SPJ website at www.spj.org and take a tour. There are plenty of resources for writers, including a job bank. The SPJ eCampus, also part of the national website, has training videos for you to learn new skills at your convenience. These include topics such as "Using Social Media Tools," "Using Blogs and Video," and "Personal Branding." The Journalist's Toolbox - updated regularly, most recently on Aug. 4 - is a site open to anyone, containing thousands of helpful links for reporters, editors, educators or anyone else doing research.

Amazing resources are just one part of what membership in SPJ offers. Besides, you immediately get the opportunity to network with 8,000 people across the county. Being a member of SPJ enhances your credibility, whatever field of writing you may be in. So we hope you make that decision to join us. And if there is any way we can be of service, just send us an email.

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

Can WMMS' success be repeated?

Back in 1968, WMMS was a new radio station set to dominate the airwaves. After 10 years they were breaking rock icons, setting market records, hosting legendary DJ's and winning the Rolling Stone Radio Station of the Year award time after time.

How did they do it?  Could that success be repeated now?

As part of the Press Club 125 anniversary celebrations, they joined with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum to put together a panel of pioneers from WMMS's golden era. It includes:

Billy Bass - pioneer of Alternative Radio,

Gaye Ramstrom - 25 years in sales and sales management at WMMS,

Denny Sanders - Rooted in the life of Cleveland Radio from 1971 to 2001.

Walt Tiburski - WMMS/Malrite Broadcasting Vice President and General Manager.

They'll discuss radio then and now at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum on Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. The cost is $12.50 and tickets are limited so click here to register now.

CDPUG offers WordPress training
for people at all skill levels

Aug. 30 at 6 p.m., the Cleveland Digital Publishing Users Group (CDPUG) is devoting its general meeting to ways you can start using WordPress whether you have no HTML experience.....or a lot.

WordPress has evolved beyond its beginnings as a blogging platform. Now it is a Content Management System that can be used by anyone.

The speaker for the evening will be Heidi Cool, formerly the webmaster at Case Western Reserve University and now a site developer for designRoom Creative as well as small and mid-size businesses. Heidi has been using WordPress since 2007 and it's now her first choice as a content management system for her clients' websites.

The meeting is being held at New Horizons Computer Learning Center, 1 Infinity Corp. Ctr. Dr. #250, Cleveland, OH 44125  Driving and Parking Directions

Cost is free for members, $10 for guests.  For more information and to RSVP, click here

A blog about editing and writing

John Limpert - SPJ member and writer-at-large for the Washingtonian - had been an editor for decades and wasn't able to find very many resources explaining how to do the job. He decided to collect and distribute the lessons he and others had learned over the years. The result is a blog called "About Editing and Writing."

The blog covers not only editing but also a range of topics that includes subjects like writer's block and the way to write a good service story as well as people who have had an effect on writing and editing.
