President's Message
|
Dear SPJ members and readers of Writer's Week:
Thank you for voting me in as president!
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
I thank Carrie Buchanan, the immediate past president, who has done a wonderful job of leading SPJ in Cleveland during the past year. She continues to publish our Writer's Week newsletter which today reaches more than 1,000 readers.
I thank Cliff Anthony, former chapter president, who introduced me to SPJ, which is the most broad-based organization for journalists in the United States. I sincerely wish I had discovered the advantages of being a member earlier on in my career! I have found SPJ members to be vibrant, engaging and lifelong learners.
As writers in a new era of journalism, we are called to move seamlessly and dexterously between different media. SPJ programs and trainings help equip us for a changing world.
I look forward to receiving ideas and feedback from you and meeting you at future events. Please let us know how we can better serve you.
I end with a quote from Margaret Wheaton: "Who we become together will always be different than who we are alone."
Let's grow stronger together! Good luck and God bless!

David C. Barnett of 90.3 WCPN wins Sigma Delta Chi Award
| |
Congratulations to David C. Barnett of 90.3 WCPN Ideastream (Cleveland), winner of a Sigma Delta Chi Radio Feature Reporting award for his article "Frank's Donation".
The article tells the story of Frank's pilgrimage through the process of donating his brother's organs. Using actual recordings, Barnett brings to life the journey that many travel when a loved one dies. Listen to the feature now
Barnett's love of the microphone began at age 2, when his father interviewed him using the first reel-to-reel recorder in their Chicago neighborhood. After they moved to Cleveland in 1963, Barnett started producing his own DJ shows and adventure stories as he negotiated public and high school. He continued his education, earning a B.A. in communications from Cleveland State University and then two master's degrees from Kent State. That's when he first fell in love with public radio. After joining WCPN in 1990 he produced a program about the Kent State shootings called "Emily's Diary" (assembled by producers Kathleen Cerveny and Jim Goldurs).
"Frank's Donation" joins the ranks of Barnett's many award-winning programs, including productions about American musical legends Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams (both engineered by WCPN's Al Dahlhause), which have been syndicated by Public Radio International.
Barnett will receive his Sigma Delta Chi award during the July 20 banquet at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. For more information about the the banquet click here
