Deadline For Next Edition: June 28

President's Message
DSA & Porter winners 2012
Tony Kozlowski, Carolyn Crowcroft and Brian Tucker with their awards
SPJ Cleveland honors great careers:
two in progress and one just starting

There is no greater pleasure for a chapter president than honoring those who have served journalism exceptionally well and encouraging those we expect to do so in the future. Thursday, I had the honor of presenting the 2012 Distinguished Service Awards to communications consultant Tony Kozlowski and Crain's Cleveland Business Editor and Publisher Brian Tucker, and the Philip W. Porter Scholarship to Carolyn Crowcroft of Solon High School.

A wonderful group of supporters gathered to honor the three in a luncheon at the City Club on Thursday. Great stories were shared and tributes paid to the winners, which we'll be happy to share on our website, along with some excellent photos, as soon as we gather them all in electronic form. Look for them in about a week's time on the website.

Meanwhile, we're busy getting ready for the June 28 Nostalgia Night: When Women Crashed the Newsroom, which also includes a brief Annual Meeting to elect our new board. See the article below and register soon for the Nostalgia Night! It's free for members - one of the privileges of chapter membership. To join SPJ, see the link in the right-hand column.

Have a great week, writers!

Carrie Buchanan

President, SPJ Cleveland

'When women crashed the newsroom'
is topic of this year's Nostalgia Night
Nellie Bly, one of America's first female journalists
On Thursday, June 28, we'll be hosting another great Nostalgia Night at the large and comfortable meeting space in the Cleveland Press Collection of the Michael Schwartz Library at Cleveland State University. We've got Doris O'Donnell, Mary Beadle, and we're working on some others, to share stories of the pioneering women in Cleveland journalism.

You've probably heard of Doris O'Donnell, who worked for the Cleveland News and covered the Sam Sheppard murder trial ("I covered that story for 10 years," she says), the assassinations of John and Bobby Kennedy, and many other top stories of the day. Now 90, O'Donnell has written a memoir, Front Page Girl, and we expect to have copies available for sale at the event.

Mary Beadle is well known for her expertise in the history of women in the media, a subject she teaches at John Carroll University, where she chairs the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. She will talk about several local women who made history by succeeding in the male-dominated world of journalism, some of whom as no longer with us. "I would talk about Dorothy Fuldheim, Alice Weston and Betty Cope, in addition to Doris O'Donnell," Beadle says.

If you worked in the early days of women's participation in  Cleveland's media, knew women who did, or experienced some of the later challenges when women started to enter the newsroom in larger numbers, do think about coming to this event and even signing up to share a brief story. You won't have to sign up in advance to speak about your memories, of course - we always open up our Nostalgia Nights to people with impromptu memories to share. But it would be helpful if you could let me know in advance, at  spjcleveland@me.com, if you have an interesting anecdote. Also, please let us know if there's a local woman we should be sure to invite to this event.

This evening will start with a brief business meeting, at 6 p.m., to elect our new board of directors - the nominations will all be settled ahead of time, so don't worry! During that time, nonmembers can grab some food and listen in; our meetings are always open to the public. The Nostalgia Night program will start at 6:30 p.m.

Chapter member Cliff Anthony, who has just published his own book, Page A-1, will also have books for sale. Anthony plans to donate 25 percent of proceeds this night to the Porter Scholarship fund. Due to the library's policies, sales will have to be finalized, for this book and O'Donnell's, outside the library afterwards.

Please register here as soon as possible. Admission is free for chapter members, $5 for non-members. Refreshments will be provided. Please see the registration page for a map and directions to the library, which is in Rhodes Tower, off Chester between East 21st and 22nd Streets. There is free parking on Chester Street starting at 6 p.m., a parking garage off Chester near East 21st that will cost you $6. The site is also well served by RTA buses.
