President's Message
'When women crashed the newsroom'
topic of this year's Nostalgia Night
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan

Thursday, June 28, starting at 6 p.m.: Mark that date and time on your calendar 'cause that's when we'll be hosting another great Nostalgia Night. We've got Doris O'Donnell, Mary Beadle, and we're working on some others, to share stories of the pioneering women in Cleveland journalism.

You've probably all heard of
Doris O'Donnell, who worked for the Cleveland News and covered the Sam Sheppard murder trial ("I covered that story for 10 years," she says), the assassinations of John and Bobby Kennedy, and many other top stories in her time. She has written a memoir, Front Page Girl, and we expect to have copies available for sale at the event.

Mary Beadle is well known in the academic world, in part for her expertise in the history of women in the media, a subject she teaches at John Carroll University. Beadle is chair of the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts at John Carroll. She will talk about several local women who made history by succeeding in the male-dominated world of journalism, some of whom as no longer with us. "I would talk about Dorothy Fuldheim, Alice Weston and Betty Cope, in addition to Doris O'Donnell," Beadle says.

If you worked in the early days of women's participation in  Cleveland's media, knew women who did, or experienced some of the later challenges when women started to enter the newsroom in larger numbers, do think about coming to this event and even signing up to share a brief story. You won't have to sign up in advance to speak about your memories, of course - we always open up our Nostalgia Nights to people with impromptu memories to share. But it would be helpful if you could let me know in advance, at the email address below, if you have an interesting anecdote to share. Also, please let us know if there's a local woman we should be sure to invite to this event.

Meanwhile, DON'T FORGET to sign up here by Monday morning at the latest, to attend the June 13 Distinguished Service Awards Luncheon. We'll honor Brian Tucker of Crain's Cleveland Business, Tony Kozlowski, longtime member of the SPJ Cleveland board and the Ohio SPJ Awards organizing team, as well as our Porter Scholarship winner, Carolyn Crowcroft of Solon High School. Details in the Summary of events at top right.

Have a great week, writers!

Carrie Buchanan

President, SPJ Cleveland

Board member Cliff Anthony publishes humorous account  of newspaper life

Cliff Anthony, a board member of our chapter, has released his first novel, titled Page-A1. This 37-chapter book takes a humorous look at a fictional small-town newspaper.

Anthony, who has worked for newspapers in the Cleveland area, skillfully weaves the challenges faced by journalists into his book.

To stay afloat in business, the newspaper's publisher, who is also the editor-in-chief, resorts to union busting, a phony diversity campaign, and even offers kickbacks to advertisers for their patronage. Page-A1 is replete with such anecdotes, seen through the eyes of a cub reporter.

"Journalists and non-journalists alike will find this novel interesting," said Anthony, assistant professor of journalism at Lorain County Community College.
"Page-A1 is dedicated to overworked, underpaid, unappreciated journalists who live in perennial poverty," Anthony said. It will make you laugh, ponder and may prompt you to buy
a copy of your local newspaper, just to support its employees.

Unlike traditional fiction, Page-A1 is written in newspaper style. The print edition is priced at $19.95 and Kindle edition at $9.95. To read an excerpt or learn more about the book, see the website at www.page-a1.com

Here are a few comments from readers:
"The stories of a small-town paper can provide big-time laughs," comments Rodney Bengston, SPJ Cleveland's second vice president and editor at Sun News.

Carrie Buchanan, our chapter president and assistant professor of communication at John Carroll University, calls it, "an insider's tale of life at a newspaper, full of humor and accurate detail. And for those who have lived it, Anthony's witty approach will bring smiles."

SPJ Cleveland treasurer and news anchor for Clear Channel Radio Tom Moore has this to say: "About as inside a look at the journalism business as you can get!"

Are you involved with a special project or event?  Let us know. We'd love to share in your achievements and efforts.
