Deadline For Next Edition: June 1

President's Message
Congrats to Porter Scholarship winner
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan
Carolyn Crowcroft of Solon High School is this year's winner of the Phillip W. Porter Scholarship, which carries a four-year, $1,000-a-year prize to help fund her college education. We'll have more information about Carolyn in a coming edition, but if you're curious, just Google her name and you'll find her online. Her  journalism career has already been going on for several years and, like most of us today, she has established an online presence.

We'll be honoring Carolyn as well as the winners of our Distinguished Service Awards - Brian Tucker of Crain's Cleveland Business and Tony Kozlowski, a longtime SPJ board member - on June 13 at a luncheon at the City Club. See details and a link to the online registration at right, in the Summary column that lists our own and other organizations' coming events of interest to communicators.

Have a great week, writers!

Journalists learn of 35-year record
of health care innovations from NASA

Did you know that NASA's Glenn Research Center has been making significant contributions to health care innovation since 1977?

The experiences astronauts have in space have led to some great medical innovations, ranging from cataract detectors to a special harness - specifically designed with the needs of space gals in mind - used by astronauts for treadmill workouts in space. Dr. Jerry Myers, Jr., chief of the bioscience and technology branch at the Glenn Research Center, explained many of these breakthroughs to a group of local journalists on May 22, at an event hosted by the Association of Health Care Journalists' new Cleveland-Akron chapter, with assistance from SPJ Cleveland.

The technology transfer from astronaut-centered medicine to other health-care institutions results from extensive collaboration between NASA and other institutions, many of them in the Cleveland-Akron area, Myers said.

"We're collaborating with everybody we can possibly collaborate with, because we would be nowhere without the local community," he told the group.

And it's not just local health care institutions that are collaborating with and benefiting from working with NASA. Students from several universities - in Northeast Ohio and elsewhere - have been working with NASA "mentors" to design and develop new materials, devices and procedures.

Astronauts are susceptible to 87 different medical issues, both in-flight and afterwards, and research on these conditions has been extensive, Myers told journalists. They include well-known issues such as loss of bone mass, which makes astronauts more susceptible to kidney stones on their return to Earth because of excess calcium in the bloodstream, as well as things like "space adaptation sickness" - the ultimate form of travel sickness.

Astronauts even have trouble with their eyes, including serious problems if they actually get something in their eyes while in space, because it's terribly difficult to remove foreign objects from the eyes in zero gravity. Astronauts can also end up with longer-term vision changes, including a condition known as papilledema, which is the inverse of glaucoma, and results from intracranial pressure.

The simplest medical procedures can become enormously complex in zero gravity, Myers explained. Imagine trying to do a simple injection in outer space, where the substance being injected can be in solid, liquid and gaseous form, all coexisting in the syringe at something called the "triple point." This challenge led to the development of special syringes that are proving useful for other applications as well, Myers said. Another innovation that's currently under development is a "reusable blood analyzer" that can do hundreds of blood tests form a single drop of blood, thanks to the miracle of fluorescence.

The list of potential innovations is so lengthy, journalists learned, that NASA engineers are challenged to find enough time to investigate the many possible applications. Hence the extensive collaboration the Glenn Research Center does with community institutions.

Many thanks to Elizabeth Wagner of the Glenn center's media relations office for setting up this excellent briefing. You can contact her for more information at elizabeth.b.wagner@nasa.gov
