President's Message
Covering the health-care debate
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan
I have not made a habit, in this column, of pontificating about journalism. This week I'm going to make an exception because there's something I really don't understand. Why are the news media doing such a terrible job of informing Americans about the details of health-care reform? The new law is two years old and still, I have only the vaguest idea what's in it, and what each American will pay for it, compared to what they're paying now.

Today's excellent article in the Plain Dealer about the errors and delays in health-care billing got me thinking, as I frequently do, about this question. When I came here from Canada in 2006, medical bills were a nightmare that took me years to get used to. Honestly, how many bills should one expect for a single medical procedure? And how many hours do people spend, both sending and responding to this mountain of paperwork? It doesn't make sense to me, but then, I'm a person who had never paid a medical bill in my life before coming here!

But much worse than the paperwork, by far, is the cost of health-care here. When we first arrived for my husband to take up a job, he found out at the last minute that his employer would not be covering his health insurance costs. Okay, we figured, we'll manage until they fix this. How much could it be, after all? We were aghast when we learned it would cost us more than $1,000 a month for insurance! And on top of that, we'd be paying all kinds of copays and extra bills for things that weren't covered! The true cost was close to $15,000 a year for a couple with no children still living at home. We struggled under that financial burden for a year before my husband's employer realized that if they didn't cover his insurance costs, he'd be leaving!

Then we got to witness the national debate over how to reform the U.S. health-care system. When given a choice, Americans didn't seem to realize there are other systems that work just fine and manage to cover everyone, while costing the individual consumer a lot less. They hear only the occasional nightmare from Canada or Britain, but not the fact that Canadians would never give up their health-care system for one that cost $1,000 a month!

Here's where the media coverage lets us down. Every reporter is trained to do stories about how much programs cost. Why, then, are reporters all over the country not comparing the consumer costs of U.S.-style health care with the costs in other countries? I have yet to see a story in the news media here in the U.S., comparing the proportion of the average Canadian's individual income taxes that goes to health care, with the fees each American pays for private health insurance. I can give you a rough idea, though.
Back in the 1970s, when we lived in Ontario, the province used to bill people for health care as a separate item in their tax bills. The cost, as I recall, was $40 from each paycheck, for our young family with children. Don't you think Americans should know about that?

Have a great week, writers!

Space Medicine: NASA's contributions
to health care research and development

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which we all know as NASA, has played a leading role in research and development of simple, low-cost medical items and devices used in the U.S. and around the world.

NASA's Glenn Research Center has been involved in much of that R and D. And since activities there are now focusing on "exploration medicine" - the design and development of diagnostic and treatment devices that non-experts can use during exploration missions - that role will grow.

To learn about NASA's work on medical devices and procedures currently used in health care and those in development, come and hear:

Who: Dr. Jerry G. Myers, Jr., PhD, chief of the Bio Science and Technology branch, NASA Glenn Research Center.

Topic: "Space Medicine: NASA's Contributions to Health Care" with emphasis on the Glenn Research Center's contributions. Dr. Myers' presentation will leave ample time for a post-talk Q and A.

When: Tuesday, May 22, 6-8 p.m. A light meal - sandwiches, fruit, soda - sign-in and introductions from 6-6:30. Dr. Myers' presentation begins at 6:30.

Where: Greenbridge Commons Community Room, 7515 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103 (free parking on lot behind building)

Why: You'll come away with lots of "out of this world" story ideas and it's free.

Co-sponsors: Association of Health Care Journalists and Society of Professional Journalists. To register (please do, so we know how much food to purchase) or for more information, send an email to AHCJ member Eileen Beal at eojb@visn.net.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Jerry G. Myers, Jr. is chief of the Bio Science and Technology branch at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. He is technical lead for GRC's efforts in computational physiology, physiological risk assessment and the medical effects of space travel. He earned his PhD in mechanical engineering, specializing in biofluid dynamics, in 1996. A consistent award-winner at NASA, he most recently won a NASA Group Achievement Award (2011) for his work in quantifying the probability of rare medical events in space. He has worked at NASA since 2000.

Host: This professional development event is hosted by the recently opened Greenbridge Commons, a supportive housing residence for chronically homeless individuals that is part of Housing First, a coalition of public and private organizations.

There are two award/fellowships offered by SPJ in the name of Eugene S. Pulliam. Each has a deadline of June 22.

Here's the breakdown and link for each one:

1) Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award

SPJ's Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award is designed to reward organizations or individuals - not necessarily in the profession of journalism - who have worked to protect the basic rights provided by the First Amendment.

Last year's winner was The Associated Press, for its unceasing efforts from 2009 to 2010 to obtain information that was withheld - to the detriment of the public.
