Every spring our chapter chooses two individuals to honor with our Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor we can bestow. One goes to someone who has been an exceptional journalist, and the other is for outstanding service to the Society of Professional Journalists (which is also, of course, service to journalism).
This year, Brian Tucker, longtime publisher and editorial director of Crain's Cleveland Business is our choice for his service to journalism in Cleveland. In addition to his outstanding work at Crain's and before that at the Associated Press, Tucker has been a longtime member of SPJ, including serving as president of this chapter. The fact that two of our current board members are Crain's employees

has a lot to do with Tucker's support of SPJ and its work to improve and sustain excellent journalism and journalistic ethics. You'll be hearing more about Tucker's accomplishments as the awards ceremony approaches, but if you're interested in knowing more right away, visit his blog at Crain's (if you're a subcriber, you'll have online access) and take a look around the Crain's website to see the kind of excellence he fosters. Communications consultant Tony Kozlowski (click his name to visit his profile on LinkedIn) will be honored for outstanding service to SPJ. In his 17 years on the SPJ Cleveland board, Tony has become the go-to guy when it's time to organize big events. He was in charge of the 2010 conference "Rise up in Cleveland" that attracted several hundred people from four states. He was also the key organizer of this year's SPJ Awards and many others in the past. Tony also attends the national SPJ conference for us every year, at his own expense, which means we have a steady and consistent presence in the national organization. He makes a point of helping out on many other occasions as well, and not only that - he makes it fun. We are making plans to honor these two fine men at a luncheon on June 6, so mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend. We have not yet finalized the details such as venue, ticket price, etc. but you'll be hearing about that, too, in the weeks to come. Free juvenile justice training seminar
for Cleveland journalists, students

If you are likely to be covering juvenile justice issues, take note! On April 24, the Children's Law Center is holding a free seminar designed to help you.
The seminar offers:
- resources, tips and ideas to help in creating stories about youth dealing with the juvenile justice system
- information about juvenile justice trends in Ohio
- networking with other journalists and potential sources
The Children's Law Center is a nonprofit organization located in Covington, Ky. It specializes in legal advocacy work for children in Ohio and Kentucky.
The Cleveland seminar is scheduled for April 24 from 1-3p.m at the Cleveland State University Student Center.

Would you like help visually presenting your skills and services to potential clients? The CDPUG Meeting on April 26 can help.
CDPUG Director of Programming, Spike Radway, will cover tried and true presentation concepts and go over the basics of Apple Keynote. Attendees will learn how to properly prepare images for a 5 minute, 20 slide auto-advancing presentation and then will have the opportunity to practice their new skills as they share their best work, specialties and who they are.
Designed to prepare members for the 8th Annual CDPUG Showcase on Thursday, May 31st. the meeting will be useful for anyone who wants to upgrade their presentation skills.

Two Eugene S. Pulliam Award
fellowships available.

There are two different award/fellowships offered by SPJ in the name of Eugene S. Pulliam. Each has a deadline of June 22.
Here's the breakdown and link for each one:
1) Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award
Defending the First Amendment is the obligation of each and every citizen. Other countries have shown that without vigilance from each citizen First Amendment rights can quickly erode
SPJ's Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award is designed to reward organizations or individuals - not necessarily in the profession of journalism - who have worked to protect the basic rights provided by the First Amendment.
Last year's winner was The Associated Press, for its unceasing efforts from 2009 to 2010 to obtain information that was withheld - to the detriment of the public.

2) Eugene S. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing
Designed to help a mid-career columnist or editorial writer take time away from their day to day work, the Pulliam Fellowship grants $75,000 to an outstanding editorial writer or columnist who meets the following criteria:
- Currently is working as a part-time or full-time editorial writer or columnist at a news publication located in the United States.
- Has three years or more experience as an editorial writer or columnist.
- Shows outstanding writing and analytical abilities.
- The editor or publisher at their publication provides assurance that the applicant will be given enough time to take up the fellowship without having to leave their job.
- If selected, work must be published within 18 months of receiving the fellowship.

| Three "Excellence In Journalism" scholarships, fellowships: apply by 6/11 |
SPJ is offering three different types of Scholarships and Fellowships under the umbrella of Excellence in Journalism.
All include the opportunity to attend the annual SPJ convention this fall.
The Terry Harper Memorial Scholarships are available to five professional journalists who are members of SPJ. They include:
- A convention registration
- Three nights stay at the convention hotel, Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa
- Airfare to Ft. Lauderdale(Up to $250)
- Tickets to the convention's two ticketed meal events
The Diversity Leadership Fellows Program is part of SPJ's commitment to strengthening diversity. Members are offered an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of SPJ through involvement in the teaching of the Society's missions, culture and operations.
This involvement begins at the SPJ National Convention for which the program includes:
- A convention registration
- Three nights stay at the convention hotel, Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa
- Airfare to Ft. Lauderdale (Up to $300)

Two local students are winners in SPJ essay contest
| Two local students have been named winnners of the Central Ohio SPJ chapter's essay contest.
Scott Remer, a 12th grade student at Beachwood High School, Beachwood, Ohio, will receive the chapter's $150 prize and will be honored at the Founders Day banquet on May 17 at the River Club.
Runners-up were: second place, Victoria Slater, a 12th grade student at Upper Arlington High School near Columbus; and third place, Amy Wu, a 10th grade student at Orange High School in Pepper Pike. They will receive certificates in recognition of their accomplishment.
The students were participating in the first phase of a national essay competition conducted by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation. They wrote on the topic: "Why is it important that we have news media that is independent of the government?"
Prizes in the national competition are a $1,000 scholarship for the first-place winner, a $500 prize for the second-place winner and a $300 scholarship for the third-place winner.

The chapter will recognize an exceptional Northeast Ohio college student with a $2,000 prize. Completed applications and supporting materials are due Sunday, May 13. Job Description
The Heights Observer is a hyper-local, citizen-driven community news program that serves Cleveland Heights and University Heights, Ohio. Published by the nonprofit, FutureHeights, the Heights Observer is a monthly print newspaper, weekly e-newsletter and website,www.heightsobserver.org.
General duties of this full -time or part-time internship include covering local city council meetings and community events, writing and editing news stories, publishing stories to the Web and e-news, creating audio/video podcasts, and working with local organizations to help them tell their story.
Qualifications: Two years of journalism studies; experience in working with volunteers; excellent written and verbal communication skills: proficiency with digital media; self-directed, ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative. Familiarity with the Heights communities is preferred.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Work schedule is flexible and will vary depending on events and projects.
