Deadline For Next Edition: April 12

President's Message
Here's an ethics challenge you'll enjoy
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan

The first-ever Ethics Feud, organized by the International Association of Business Communicators and co-sponsored by SPJ Cleveland, is shaping up to be a really entertaining event. This Thursday, April 12, at the City Club, starting at 11:30 a.m. you'll see a serious ethical questions discussed  in a "Family Feud"-style game- show format. A team of journalists will square off against a team of business communicators to see who's more ethical.

SPJ's original representative on the journalists' panel, Tom Moore, had to drop out, but Leo Jeffres, recently retired Cleveland State University journalism professor, has stepped up to take his place. Also on the journalists' panel are Scott Suttell of Crain's Cleveland Business, Randy Roguski, business editor of the Plain Dealer, and Becky Gaylord, former PD reporter and editorial board member, who now runs her own communications firm.

The business communicators' panel will feature our good friend Kelly Blazek, who finds and publicizes many of the media jobs listed below and also works for Gemba Communications, David Meeker of Meeker-Young LLC,

Mark Crowley of Sherwin-Williams and Barb Payner of Hennes Paynter Communications.

There are lots more details on the registration website, ethicsfeud.eventbrite.com but you have to scroll down under the actual registration information to see the full writeup, which gives information about the panelists and lots of other details. You'll also see on the site that SPJ members get a $10 discount on tickets -- click on the  special tab for that rate. And if you register before 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 9, you can get a double discount: an extra $5 off if you enter the code ETHICS201205.

Non-members can get a $10 special discount for registering by 11:30 a.m. Monday, by entering code: ETHICS201210.

So go for it, and we'll see you there! Cheer on the journalists' team with your presence, and also by wearing something red - that's our team color! (If you work on the other side, wear blue to support the business communicators' team.)

Even if you can't attend, please download this flyer and post it or send it to friends.

Have a great week, writers!

Carrie Buchanan

Two Eugene S. Pulliam Award

Fellowships Available.

There are two different award/fellowships offered by SPJ in the name of Eugene S. Pulliam. Each has a deadline of June 22.

Here's the breakdown and link for each one:

1) Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award

Defending the First Amendment is the obligation of each and every citizen. Other countries have shown that without vigilance from each citizen First Amendment rights can quickly erode

SPJ's Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award is designed to reward organizations or individuals - not necessarily in the profession of journalism - who have worked to protect the basic rights provided by the First Amendment.

Last year's winner was The Associated Press, for its unceasing efforts from 2009 to 2010 to obtain information that was withheld - to the detriment of the public.

For more information and to nominate someone for this award CLICK HERE

2) Eugene S. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing

Designed to help a mid-career columnist or editorial writer take time away from their day to day work, the Pulliam Fellowship grants $75,000 to an outstanding editorial writer or columnist who meets the following criteria:
