President's Message |
Inspired anew by the film festival
 | |
Carrie Buchanan
|
I realize it's not strictly journalism, but today I want to say how inspired I am, every year at this time, by the Cleveland International Film Festival. This year was no exception. We have friends who come annually from Ottawa, Canada, to join us for a weekend of nearly non-stop film. The CIFF is a favorite of theirs, and of mine, not just because we love film, but because we love independent film.
And indeed, there is journalism in the many excellent documentaries screened at the event, so I'm not entirely off base in writing about it here. I only managed to attend two of the 11 days of this year's festival, but my favorite film in that time was a documentary, and it was very good journalism. It was Under African Skies, the story of Paul Simon's controversial work with South African musicians in 1985-87 to produce the groundbreaking album, Graceland. Controversy arose because Simon defied the cultural boycott in effect at that time - in the film, he makes clear that he simply wanted to make music and wasn't really aware of the politics until after he visited. The film capably explores both sides of that issue, telling Simon's side but also including the boycott organizers' perspective through interviews with Dali Tambo, leader of Artists Against Apartheid and son of the late African National Congress president Oliver Tambo, and others who had issues with Simon's choice to visit and work with South African musicians at that time. There is also an extensive dialogue between Simon and Dali Tambo, where each expresses his side of the story and they end with apparent mutual understanding and a friendly handshake.
How I wish more journalists today could achieve the same degree of balance in their work! My students sometimes have difficulty understanding this desire of mine for balance, and I refer them repeatedly to the basic principles outlined more than a decade ago by Tom Rosenstiel and Bill Kovach in The Elements of Journalism. These are posted on the Pew Center's website dedicated to the Project for Excellence in Journalism, www.journalism.org. When you visit the site, look for the Principles of Journalism, under the Journalism Resources tab. I go there often to remind myself, and teach my students, of the values we hold dear.
Have a great week, writers!Carrie Buchanan

Vladimir Pozner to speak April 3
|
Vladimir Pozner, the well known Russian journalist and author, is coming to Cleveland this Tuesday, April 3, as part of the Cleveland Clinic's "Ideas for Tomorrow" series. Pozner will discuss journalism in Russia and America
Born in 1934, in Paris, France, Pozner lived in the U.S. from the age of 6 to 14. In 1948 his family moved behind the Iron Curtain, first to Berlin and then to Moscow.
Pozner's Soviet career in journalism included a post as senior editor at the Novosty Press Agency. He also served as executive editor of Soviet Life magazine, followed by the same position at Sputnik magazine.
His experience with North American journalism started in 1970, when he joined the USSR State Committee for TV & Radio. There, he served as a commentator on the North American Service of Radio Moscow. That is when his appearances on U.S., French and Japanese TV networks began.
In 1985-1986 Pozner and Phil Donahue co-hosted two "space bridges." This led to the show "Pozner & Donahue," which broadcast from New York City from 1991 - 1996.
In 1990, Pozner's national bestseller, "Parting With Illusions," was published by the Atlantic Monthly Press. It remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 12 weeks.
Currently Dean of the Pozner School of Television Journalism, Pozner also served as president of the Academy of Russian Television. He is a recipient of three Emmy awards.
The event will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the InterContinental Hotel, 9801 Carnegie Ave., Cleveland. Admission is free but you need to register.
To reserve your seat, please call 216.932.3448 or register here.

| Ethics Feud coming April 12 | |
What's the most ethically minded organization you know?
You got it! SPJ. Known worldwide for its excellent Code of Ethics for journalists, SPJ should be considered the reigning champion, right?
Well, some other organizations around town have got the idea of challenging us on that, and invited us to a game-show style event they're calling the Ethics Feud. It will be held at the City Club, over the lunch hour, on Thursday, April 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The idea is the brainchild of the International Association of Business Communicators, and it will feature a team of business communicators versus a team of local journalists. Representing SPJ, we hope, will be Tom Moore of WTAM Radio, who is a board member. Tom is looking for a backup person in case he can't attend, and we have asked all our board members but none is available on that day. If you are a member who's really familiar with the SPJ Code of Ethics, and would like to be Tom's backup, please email me at the address below.
More details on this event are coming, such as how to register and the cost to attend. Meanwhile, mark the date on your calendar and plan to be there to support SPJ and the team of journalists!
