President's Message
Ethics Feud coming April 12
Carrie Buchanan
Carrie Buchanan

What's the most ethically minded organization you know?

You got it! SPJ. Known worldwide for its excellent Code of Ethics for journalists, SPJ should be considered the reigning champion, right?

Well, some other organizations around town have got the idea of challenging us on that, and invited us to a game-show style event they're calling the Ethics Feud. It will be held at the City Club, over the lunch hour, on Thursday, April 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The idea is the brainchild of the International Association of Business Communicators, and it will feature a team of business communicators versus a team of local journalists. Representing SPJ, we hope, will be Tom Moore of
WTAM Radio, who is a board member. Tom is looking for a backup person in case he can't attend, and we have asked all our board members but none is available on that day. If you are a member who's really familiar with the SPJ Code of Ethics, and would like to be Tom's backup, please email me at the address below.

I will have more details on this event, such as how to register and the cost to attend, in the near future. Meanwhile, mark the date on your calendar and plan to be there to support SPJ and the team of journalists!

PS. You may notice I have not talked about the conference, "Journalism Rebooted," that I was so looking forward to attending this weekend. My back went out and I could not go. If there's someone else who was there and could send a brief writeup, we'd really like to get some details into a future Writer's Week. I'm sure it was a terrific event.

Have a great week, writers!

Carrie Buchanan

President, SPJ Cleveland

We're sure you want to know more about what distinguished these groups from the rest of the nominees who included:

  • The Ohio Department of Transportation

Two Eugene S. Pulliam Award

Fellowships Available.

There are two different award/fellowships offered by SPJ in the name of Eugene S. Pulliam. Each has a deadline of June 22.

Here's the breakdown and link for each one:

1) Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award

Defending the First Amendment is the obligation of each and every citizen. Other countries have shown that without vigilance from each citizen First Amendment rights can quickly erode

SPJ's Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award is designed to reward organizations or individuals - not necessarily in the profession of journalism - who have worked to protect the basic rights provided by the First Amendment.

Last year's winner was The Associated Press, for its unceasing efforts from 2009 to 2010 to obtain information that was withheld - to the detriment of the public.

For more information and to nominate someone for this award CLICK HERE

2) Eugene S. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing

Designed to help a mid-career columnist or editorial writer take time away from their day to day work, the Pulliam Fellowship grants $75,000 to an outstanding editorial writer or columnist who meets the following criteria:

  • Currently is working as a part-time or full-time editorial writer or columnist at a news publication located in the United States.
  • Has three years or more experience as an editorial writer or columnist.
  • Shows outstanding writing and analytical abilities.
  • The editor or publisher at their publication provides assurance that the applicant will be given enough time to take up the fellowship without having to leave their job.
  •  If selected, work must be published within 18 months of receiving the fellowship.
